Samantha's Voice
"Thoughts need words. Words need a voice." - Sharon Draper Hello! My name is Samantha. My friends call me Sam. About 1 in 40,000 babies are born with distal 18q-.
This page is for my thoughts, as seen and written through the eyes of my mom! I was born with a chromosome 18q- deletion, also known as distal 18q-. I guess this makes me quite unique! As a result of the 18q- deletion, I am Deaf and intellectually and developmentally delayed. I also have a history of right unilateral cleft lip and complete cleft palate, ADHD, mood disorder, thyroiditis, autism and
Thank you, Paige Siemers, for encouraging me to do this for Sam. I was hesitant but then you reminded me that “the world has made the stuff for our kids so damn expensive.” Well stated. 🩷

Tonight I got to watch the Sabercats with MLR player .akina It was a fun and exciting game! I ate popcorn and hopped around. We also watched fireworks after the match and even met former Houston Dynamo player, Brian Ching. Thank you .akina for a great night! ♥️🤙🏼🏉
Lots of fun watching the Houston SaberCats Rugby match tonight! My favorite part was being able to go onto the pitch to meet the players! 🖤💛
This morning my mom and I stopped by the EOB to see Ms. Suzette. My friends were excited and they came out to see me too! ♥️
Ice skating with friends and then a walk to Shake Shack! ♥️😊
Today I went to the Volunteers of America IDD Program Fall Festival. This is the program that provides my Deaf-Blind Multiple Disabilities services. I saw Ms. Alayne and Ms. Beanca. Ms. Alayne is the first person my mom met with when I finally qualified for DBMD services at age 13. Ms. Beanca is the Regional Director of VOA. 🩷I had a fun time eating BBQ from Pappa’s, cake and other treats! I also played bingo and won a gift card, and then my mom helped me dance with the rest of the group. Everyone was happy and we all had a good day! 🎃♥️
My best sister friend was in town yesterday and she stopped by to visit me. I love her so much!! ♥️🥰
I ran with Ainsley’s Angels for the first time this evening at the Ainsley’s Angels 6th Annual Texas Twilight 5K. Ms. Paige made sure I had the Axiom chariot. I wasn’t too sure about it at first. I sat next to it and my mom took my hand and helped me feel the texture on the seat cushion and on the foot plate. After a while, I stood up and that’s when my mom, dad and Mr. Kim “Rooster” Rossiter helped me sit in it. It was fantastic and perfect for me! My runners were from the Katy Eclipse basketball team. I had a great time! 🩷
Happy Birthday to my “big sister” who always loves to spend time with me and teach me how to do new things! I miss her but I know I will see her again very soon. ♥️🧁🥳

I had fun with my mom and dad at the Space Cowboys game this evening. It was Margaritaville night and the first 2,000 fans received a Space Cowboys Hawaiian shirt.
A person who is deaf-blind must somehow make sense of the world using the limited information available to him or her. If the person’s sensory disabilities are great (like my own) and if people in the environment have not made an effort to order the world for him or her in a way that makes it easier to understand, this challenge may be overwhelming. Behavioral and emotional difficulties often accompany deaf-blindness and are the natural outcomes of the child’s or adult’s inability to understand and communicate.
People who can see and hear often take for granted the information that those senses provide. Events such as the approach of another person, an upcoming meal, the decision to go out, a change in routine are all signaled by sights and sounds that allow a person to prepare for them. The child or adult (like me) who misses these cues because of limited sight and/or hearing may come to experience the world as an unpredictable, and possibly threatening place. To a great extent, persons who are deaf-blind must depend upon the good will and sensitivity of those around them to make their world safe and understandable.

Did you know that after becoming deaf, Beethoven sawed the legs off his piano and played it on the floor so he could feel its vibrations? Nearly two centuries later, brain imaging is revealing that people who are Deaf may 'hear' vibrations just like others hear sounds - using the auditory centers of the brain. I have always loved feeling the vibration of sound. I love touching the guitar and drums when they are played. I love feeling the sounds from a speaker. ♥️🎸🥁🪘🪇🎶
Happy Father’s Day to the BEST dad ever!! ♥️🤟🏼

Cameron came to visit me today! He’s my best friend. 🥰
Just imagine…
I had a great time at the game today. After they won, I was able to go out on the pitch and meet some of the players and get their autographs. My mom and dad were so grateful to meet .akina I’m looking forward to going to another game soon.
My Valentine is busy with his mock trial preparation, but I’ll see him soon! Everyone should have a best friend and valentine like mine! Happy Valentine’s Day, ♥️🥰

When you are riding in the backseat, you are nonverbal and you are feeling thirsty, then you have to figure out how to communicate! 😁🙌🏼😉
Yesterday I went to explore Endless Fitness and I met Ms. Maggie. It might take me some time to get comfortable with the new environment and figure out what I am supposed to do, but my mom believes that I can do it and it will fun. ♥️
I went ice skating for the first time last night. It was Special Needs Sunday Night at Green Mountain Energy Ice. I loved going around the rink in my chair and feeling the cool breeze. It was so much fun!
