A fun fact about me is I was a ghost 👻 for Halloween for SEVERAL years — I loved it because I could hide behind this sheet and it felt like I was invisble, no one would mess with me there 🥹 I could look on the world, take it all in, be an observer who didn’t have to engage if she didn’t want to, was expect to be quiet becasuse DUH — I’m a ghost. No one is supposed to know I’m here.⁠

And people respected me as a ghost 🫥 they let me be quiet, under that sheet I didn’t have to pretend to be anyone but me.⁠

Something miraculous has happened over the past two weeks in our country: we’ve been reminded that we’re better together and that we desperately need one another.

Disaster and suffering has a way of doing that.

It breaks us wide open and gets us outside of our isolation which reminds us what the real message is: we are all people, looking for love, connection, peace and comfort.

As I’ve looked upon the pictures of our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, I’ve thought — it’s as if mother nature’s heart had to break to break our own.

Now, let me be clear in saying I do not believe disaster and tragedy are ever deserved or predestined. The devastation that Hurricane Helene descended upon our country is absolutely horrific and I wish with all my heart it didn’t happen. It’s so incredibly unfair.

But it did happen and what has followed is this:

The hands and feet of the doers are drowning out the noise of the critics.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the book tour of at 💫

Sharon’s new (and first) book is called “The Small and the Mighty.” It’s stories of people like you and me — “nobodies” as far as our history books are concerned — who made America and defined history.

I was reminded by Sharon last night as we’ve been reminded these past few weeks:

👉🏼Nobody is coming with the plan, we are the plan.

We, you and me, are the ones to shape history.

So I ask you today, what’s one thing you can do to affect the plan? Can you tone down your criticism from behind a tiny screen and instead step out into the world to make a difference?

To spread love, to build and rebuild?

Many of you know our roots run deep in Western North Carolina. It is where my grandparents lived most of my life, where my parents moved nearly 15 years ago, where I have called home for that time, and where my husband and I got married.

🌲 The land of this beloved and sacred place also holds the origins for Gracious Garlands.

To watch it be ripped apart by other nature is utterly devastating. To witness the people of this place suffer unimaginable tragedy and loss has shattered my heart into a thousand pieces.

I have cried and cried this week for this place and its people.

I am so fortunate to say my family is safe and their livelihoods spared. But all around them, others cannot say the same.

Businesses, farms, vendors, friends that we dearly love have lost everything.

While the devastation is almost unbearable, to watch people from all over come together to put this place, these people and these communities back together has been so moving, so beautiful.

People are revealing their colors – and it’s absolutely breathtaking.

It breaks my heart that the noise of our world often covers up what is always within us – love, compassion, hope, kindness, selflessness, courage, grit and connectedness.

It breaks my heart that sometimes our hearts must be broken, shattered even, for us to wake up – to take off our armor of pride, security or ego – to show our true colors.

But what gives me hope is that those true colors are just as magnificent and lovely as when those Blue Ridge Mountains set ablaze with notes of Autumn each October.

We are all yet a reflection of nature.

And people and this land need us now.
