"I highly recommend Caroline as a coach mentor. She has supported me to achieve my ICF MCC certification but our sessions have given me so much more. She builds confidence, helps you connect deeply to your purpose and is extremely knowledgeable to all areas of coaching. We also laughed a lot, which helped me let go of needing to “get it right.” I was able to find my way and flow into my very best practice. As I said, Caroline is fabulous and if you are looking for a mentor coach then you have found a great one here."

If you are embarking upon or then ICF requires you to have completed 10 hours of mentor coaching. This can be one-to-one or a combination of one-to-one and group sessions with a minimum of 3 hours of one-to-one and this needs to be delivered over at least a 3 month period.

Unfortunately, I have many coaches coming to me who have had negative experiences with mentor coaching which has been boring, formulaic, inaccurate and which has led to failed performance evaluations as well as low confidence. :-(

Unlike many mentor coaches, I have completed specific training in this area and have 20+ years background as well as a post-graduate certificate in education. As such, I am well-versed in using competency frameworks and mapping your coaching to specific criteria (be it BARS, core competencies, BARS or Markers). I am also an accredited and hold Supervision Individual Award as well as being an . I have completed ICF PCC Marker and MCC BARS training.

Thankfully, I also have a proven track record as all ACC, PCC and MCC submissions to date have passed first time.

What's included?
- Bespoke feedback highlighting areas of strength and development
- Transcripts for your 1:1 sessions - one less thing for you to worry about
- Access to a library of ICF And ACC, PCC and MCC recordings and transcripts
- Credential Exam preparation including a full 81 question mock exam
- Complementary access to the jigsaw.coach active listening self-study programme.

My next two groups are already full, so your next opportunity to join will be the sessions starting on 5th September 2024.

Musings on the Topic of Empathy

Let’s first start with the question that I am asked so often, how do sympathy and empathy differ?

The word derives from the Greek em-pathos which translates to in-feeling. A modern definition of empathy is often termed the ability to understand and the of another, to ‘feel with’ another person or to ‘be with somebody in their experiences and feelings’. This differs from the definition of sympathy which is to have feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune. If I am , I am there with that person, not a layer away.

Now moving on to the quotation from Harper Lee’s famous from 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird, which I have recently been re-reading. The protagonist, young Scout, strives to her older brother Jem. In a bid to feel what her brother feels, and to see things from his perspective, she says, “I tried to climb into Jem’s skin and walk around in it.” One of the reasons I love so much, what a beautifully expressed sentiment!

Next question, so why is empathy important in coaching?

If we take as an example, the Core Competencies include direct references to empathy in terms of desired for coaches.

4. Cultivates Trust and Safety
Shows support, empathy and concern for the client.

5. Maintains Presence
Remains focused, observant, empathetic and responsive to the client.

What are your thoughts about the importance of empathy as a and a ?

What is coaching for educators?

Coaching provides a completely confidential space for leaders to reflect, explore and design action. Leaders can often feel isolated and coaching can provide an opportunity for those with key responsibilities to focus on a variety of areas including, but certainly not limited to:

- Consciously exploring your leadership style
- Ensuring the best possible results for different stakeholders
- Dealing with difficult situations and difficult conversations
- Managing teams
- Identifying your strengths and areas for development
- Honing reflective practice skills
- Defining your priorities as an educator
- Establishing short, medium and long term goals for your career.

Do you feel that coaching may be useful for your own professional development or beneficial for your leadership team, or your institution?

Please get in touch to arrange a conversation with Caroline to find out how coaching works as well as what benefits and opportunities it can offer.
