2023 Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Many people working in the Indian Health Services are striving to curb a syndemic—i.e., a cluster of epidemics, including HIV—within the communities they serve, but finding solutions is difficult.
ANAC Rhode Island was incredibly honored yesterday to receive the Community Hero Award-Organization from the RI HIV/STI Prevention Coalition! And our very own Diane Dufresne RN, MA, current Board Member, won the Community Hero Award-Individual!! Congratulations Diane!!
Receiving this award the year that UNAIDS and the WHO declared “Let Communities Lead” as the World AIDS Day theme was especially humbling. It truly does take a community to do this work!
Special thanks to Board Member Helen Patterson ACLPN, CCRP for accepting the award on behalf of RIANAC.
Diane and Helen:
Congratulations Chapters Committee Chair, Peter Oates- Lifetime achievement award! So well deserved RI Chapter loves you ❤️
On Friday, Sept. 30th, RIANAC, in partnership with Rhode Island College Zvart Onanian School of Nursing, was thrilled to host Teaching Day 2023: Our Work Continues! After a three year hiatus it was wonderful to be back with members, colleagues and friends!
We started off the day with an important “Public Health Update in S*xual Health” by Philip Chan, MD, MS followed by an engaging presentation by the President of ANAC’s Board of Directors Melanie Steilen, RN, BSN, ACRN, “What Does It Mean to Be S*x Positive and Trauma Informed?”
Closing out the morning session was RIANAC’s Director at Large, Ashley Perry, with a thought provoking presentation, “The Battle Continues: Eliminating Stigma in the HIV and Addiction/Recovery Community”
After lunch the education continued with an essential presentation by RIANAC’s founding President-and current national ANAC Director,Patricia Cioe, PhD, RN, APRN on “Tobacco Dependence in People with HIV: A Brief Update on Recent Clinic Trials in the Providence Community”.
Ohio ANAC member. Scott Emory Moore, PhD, RN, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, FAAN provided a valuable introduction and overview of the benefits to researchers, participants and students in his presentation, “All of Us Research Program of the National Institutes of Health-An Introduction”.
Winding up our day was a community panel discussion moderated by Ashley Perry, “How Did the Rhode Island HIV Community Respond to the COVID-19 and Mpox Pandemics”. The panel remarks and observations, coupled with a lively discussion was an incredible way to end our “Welcome Back” teaching day!
Sincere thanks to the Onanian School of Nursing, our presenters and panelists, our vendors, attendees and the support staff at Rhode Island Nursing Education Center. Special thanks to Joanne Costello, PhD, MPH, RN for her invaluable assistance.

RIANAC supports the recent legislation passed by the RI General Assembly to make HIV-prevention medications (PrEP and PEP) free and accessible to qualifying patients. This legislation (S-0563) requires health insurance plans to cover these medications (oral and injectable) with no out of pocket costs to patients. Additionally, it would allow pharmacists to prescribe them to eligible patients in addition to NPs, PAs and MD/DOs. We strongly encourage Governor McKee to sign this bill into law to help !
