I didn’t sleep well last night. I am not good at change, I always go kicking and screaming, why should this be any different? When I decided it was time to move on, it felt right, but I confess, today I am consumed with doubt and I’m fighting the urge to wax poetic in increasingly depressive terms.
I realized recently that I recorded the first Quiet Company demos on my Tascam 4-track 20 years ago. Half of my life has gone into this band, and I am grateful. I have a tendency to focus on my regrets, which are legion, but I’m trying hard to think about everything that I’ve gained because of this band: So many friends, so many good times, so many songs, so many places I never would’ve seen otherwise, etc.
I have a lot of thoughts and feelings right now, I’m sure friends will tire of it soon, but for now let’s have one more party together. Ticket link is in the bio, and we’ve put together a great bill with our oldest friends and so we hope you can be there. Thanks to and for helping us out.
It’s not goodbye, we’re all still making music, but everything is temporary/change is the only constant and all that.
So it goes.

Shine Honesty was released 16 years ago today on . It was the first time I'd been signed and the future felt bright. I had recorded the album as a solo record after my last band, The Connotations (theconnotations.bandcamp.com) had broken up and about half the songs on it were also Connotation songs. , being a veritable saint, recorded it and played all the drums, pretty much just out of the goodness of his heart.
The label flew me out to California (my first time on a plane!) to add a couple odds and ends, and I felt like hot s**t even though I really just spent a week mostly in a hotel eating pizza and walking around a very nondescript area of Yorba Linda. It was all golden to me, I was just happy to be on the same label as .
I think the record is ok. I was young and I think I had a lot of incorrect, and possibly toxic, beliefs about love/god/the world/how much I should play piano, but I'm not gonna beat myself up. My biggest regret was re-recording this record years later. Before the record got picked up I was going to move back to Nashville and go back to college, and I probably should have, but instead I found Tommy and Tim and we played our first show at (unofficial) SXSW that year.
I don't think it's a secret that this is our least popular record but I hope some of you liked it.
Maybe for some of you it's our best record and you've always wondered what happened to us after this... who knows?!
