ABOUT US
The University of Cape Town Muslim Youth Movement (UCT MYM) is a student organisation which seeks a progressive and humanist interpretation of Islam, focusing on authentic inclusion of marginalised groups, and social justice activism. We aim to show commitment to Islam through a constant critical engagement with the Qur’an (as a primary source of guidance) and authentic Prophetic Traditi
on (as a secondary source). We are committed to reading Islamic scriptures on the basis of the Qur’anic messages of liberation, compassion, justice, truth, mutual consultation and accountability. We believe that as conscientious Muslims, responsible South African citizens, and active students, we have a duty in striving for social justice for all based on the lens of intersectionality. Our dynamic and socially responsive vision of Islam has been shaped by the current global dialogue defining the Muslim identity, where both extremist and Islamophobic sentiments have perpetuated an increasingly negative perception of Islam. We strive toward a more empowered, compassionate and just South African, as well as global, society. HISTORY OF THE MYM NATIONAL
The MYM began on the 16 December 1970 in Durban in response to the call of the Qur’an:
“Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is evil; they are the ones to attain success…”(Qur’an 3:104)
The MYM soon developed into a national organisation with youth throughout the country, rallying to the call to struggle and the realisation of Islam as a comprehensive way of life. The MYM operates in five regions: Kwa-Zulu Natal, Western Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.
