4. The risks of footwear can outweigh the benefits if they do not fit and are not fitted properly.
Podiatrists, pedorthotists, orthotists and good shoe stores (with well-trained personnel) can do a great deal in reducing the risk of developing pre-ulcerous lesions.

A good fit, the right closure mechanism and in some cases the addition of orthoses can protect feet and reduce the risk of ulceration.
Podiatrists are uniquely placed to provide comprehensive advice on appropriate footwear BUT we have to remember that our advice needs to be personalised. The 'ideal or perfect' shoe may fit all our expectations but if your client doesn't wear them (for many reasons) they don't work at all!!
COMPROMISE may be the name of the game. :)
