Thank you to the Rev. Madge McLain and the warm and inviting folks of St. Paul’s in Abbeville for making us feel at home this morning.

I'm thankful for folks like Julie and Ken at For The Birds of Acadiana. They took in this little blue jay nestling that Henry and I found under one of our oak trees this afternoon. It costs about $100-$200 to rehab each bird, and they take in about 600 a year. As a 501(c)3, For The Birds of Acadiana is Louisiana's only state and federally permitted facility rehabilitating federally protected songbirds, waterfowl, and waterbirds. Please consider donating to their good work.

A different way of worshiping today with my classmates Paula and Wendy.

When I asked, “Y’all want to go to the St. John Coltrane Church?” they said, “Sure, how do we get there?”

I love these folks. Always open to all the ways in which The Spirit can move us.

There were so many great moments yesterday that I haven’t really had the chance to process it all. These are just a handful of the images from Henry’s graduation spent with family and friends. I’m so thankful for everyone who made it into town or reached out to Henry during this time. He shines the best when the people he loves the most are within arm’s reach, and it’s beautiful to witness.

Henry made the Headmaster’s List again, had the highest GPA in his AP U.S. Government class, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

But the most overwhelming moment was when Henry received the Bishop and Mrs. Henton Award. Named in honor of The Rt. Rev. Willis R. Henton - the first Bishop of the Diocese of Western Louisiana and ESA's Chaplain Emeritus - and his wife, Martha, the award is presented to a senior who exemplifies the fundamental virtues of care, love, and service to the ESA family and the greater community - just as the Bishop and Mrs. Henton did. The icing on the cake was that the award was presented by my longtime friend and co-worker Scott Jordan, who had lovely things to say about Henry (and which I didn’t hear much of because I was trying not to blubber in front of everyone).

Thanks again, y'all.

This life seems to be passing by too quickly.

Hug the ones you love.

What an honor and a pleasure this evening was.

Henry graduates from the Episcopal School of Acadiana tomorrow. ESA's class of 2024 started preK-3 the same year I started teaching 15 years ago. In a lot of ways, I feel like I’ve grown up with them; and tonight, I’m honored to preach at the Eucharist for my son and his classmates with the Rt. Rev. Jake Owensby.

I love these kids and how they love their neighbors.

Last week, middle and upper school students on the Cade campus collected canned goods for their annual spring food drive. Items collected included 116 packages of oatmeal, 70 packages of grits, 53 pounds of rice, 62 cans of beans, 27 cans of soup, 24 pounds of peanut butter, 10 jars of jelly, and 9 pounds of dried beans. Most of this food will help neighboring students address food insecurity while they are not in school during spring break. About 15% of Louisiana’s population experiences food insecurity. Nearly 12% of the population in Lafayette Parish and over 15% of the residents of Iberia Parish don’t have enough to eat regularly. The collected items will benefit the food pantries at Solomon House in New Iberia and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Lafayette. Thanks to the Cade students and parents who made this drive such a success! Happy Easter!

Charles Sallis, 89, Dies; Upended the Teaching of Mississippi History 17/02/2024

Charles Sallis was one of my undergraduate professors who helped me come to terms with my own discomfort with the world through the study of history. He was my advisor at Millsaps College and a great man. I often think about him, his lectures, his advice, his excitement, his quirks, his loud suits, his passion for his work, his GI glasses, and his really awful jokes read from notecards at the school's talent show every year.

While he was my professor, I had no clue about his Mississippi history textbook. When I was in grad school a few years back, I read Charles W. Eagles's "Civil Rights, Culture Wars," and I realized that I had been taught by not just a great man but also a legend who worked to make this world a better place than he found it.

God's peace and love be with you, Dr. Sallis.

Charles Sallis, 89, Dies; Upended the Teaching of Mississippi History He collaborated on a textbook so unsparing in its review of the state’s grim past that it was barred from schools almost as soon as it appeared.

We're still collecting items for Adopt-A-Grand for the next two days!

There's still time to send in gift items for our neighbors at the Landmark of Acadiana Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cade. We will be collecting items until this Friday, Dec. 8. On Friday, Dec. 15, we will deliver these items to the Landmark and host a Christmas Party from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Next Wednesday, December 13th, students can pay $3 to wear Jammies for Grammies. All funds raised will go to support the party and gifts for the Landmark residents. Thank you!
