Another terrific program at our weekly meeting! Captains John and Deanna Peterson of the SV Charrette joined us to talk about sailing, team building and leadership.

John and Deanna race - quite successfully - the Charrette, a 38 ft sailing vessel, with a youth crew (18 minimum age) against bigger, lighter boats with more experienced crews. Their secret to success? It’s “The Charrette Way”:

1. Know your requirements
2. Build diverse teams
3. Do something different
4. Out work your competitors
5. Be the coach, not the driver
6. Level the playing field- each crew member is responsible for themselves and their performance and each has input
7. Give everyone a chance to shine & don’t prejudge what position players are going to play
8. Define success at a high level
9.Never let the team quit
10. Go to the party - Celebrate!
11. The prize is nice but building leaders is priceless

Thank you John and Deanna!

SV Charrette is getting ready to race the 100th running of the Baview Race to Mackinac. With over 330 boats, this will be the largest fleet that any of us have ever sailed in. It will also be cool to race the original course that the 12 boats sailed in 1925 which no one still living has ever done. More information on this storied race may be found here:

A Queens Cup Sectional 4 peat and 16th overall) for this amazing team as we sailed through big chop followed by hours of heavy rain and periods of light wind that really shuffled the deck throughout the night. There's nothing "fair weathered" about this squad!

2023 LMSS Double Handed Championship

16/06/2023

In sail racing, it is often said that a great crew can make the skipper look good but after yesterday, I would posit that a great skipper keeps the crew ON the boat. Such was the case yesterday when Deanna kept me on the boat and S/V Charrette under control when we got hit with a sudden 35kt straight line wind that came up suddenly. We persevered through hours of upwind sailing and big chop and managed not to break the boat. We're pretty sore today but definitely proud of our result!

S/V Charrette stopped to visit the Kewaunee breakwater light today on our way to the LMSS Doublehanded Championship that starts from Winthrop Harbor, IL on Thursday. There are 57 boats entered sailing two different courses with multiple divisions but we are new to this type of racing so our goals are modest. We will give you a full report after we finish in Port Washington.
