The Student Mentoring Program (SMP) is sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers-Omaha Post

The program is designed to stimulate Omaha area secondary school students' interest and excitement in STEM (science, technology, engineering/architecture and math). The program has been ongoing since 1994 and has offered more than 3000 students an opportunity to participate in “real-life” projects facilitated by professional engineers and architects and other science-related professions. Schools are starting back and we are gearing up for the 2024-2025 STEM Competition! At this point, I believe all middle school and high school teams are returning to our competition. New school teams are forming now! We kick off the end of September!

We are gaining at least four new middle schools and some of our existing high schools will have more teams this year. And we still have room for more schools! If you have a child, student, teacher, or school that would be interested, let’s talk. New mentors are invited to get involved too!

Our program was started in 1994 to grow the interest of STEM activities among middle school and high school students to increase the amount of students entering and finishing college with engineering and architecture degrees. The program is based on “Real World” experiences in engineering and architecture. Today, we remain a one of a kind program.

Please share this post with those you know that might benefit from being a part of our program!

My student mentoring program needs mentors! This program is SAME's STEM student outreach competition. If you are an engineer, architect, or someone in the construction industry, you could fill one of these positions for me.

I have a high school team working on a Hybrid Plane project.
I have a high school team working on an Artificial Fish Habitat for Standing Bear Lake Renovations project.
I have a middle school team working on a light pollution project.

You don't have to be an expert in any of these because you can bring in experts. I need someone willing to meet with these teams every week to provide guidance.

I do need an expert who could meet once with a middle school team that has a project involving a compost system.

If you know anyone who may be able to help, please share this post. If you are interested, contact me at [email protected]

‼️We need mentors! Engineers, architects, or anyone in construction! I have three teams that need mentors.
Please send me an email if you are interested!

Last week, our STEM Engineering and Construction camps arrived at completion for the summer. Students learned what it takes to become a STEM professional and what options exist to explore that interest from high school to college and beyond.

Each camp had a unique curriculum featuring hands-on activities in competitive environments promoting teamwork, leadership, project management, and problem-solving. Check out all of the photos from our five summer camps this year on Flickr: https://bit.ly/3BVS0s9
