Ahead of her appearance at CRN Pipeline 2023 in August, we asked Microsoft's Global Partner Solutions Director for ANZ, Vanessa Sorenson, about the realities of bringing people from outside IT into the channel. Watch the video below. CRN has spoken to technology business leaders who have looked to hire people from retail, automotive and other sectors. Programs exist to help with this – including programs that aim to help indigenous Australians, military veterans and athletes enter technology roles. But often, candidates who enter these programs don’t end up in the IT industry. That’s a problem Sorenson wants to address. For 18 months, Microsoft has been running the 10K Wāhine program in New Zealand, which aims to help 10,000 New Zealand women build skills and confidence to secure digital roles. Sorenson wants technology partners to commit to hiring 10K Wāhine participants, and she said Microsoft will look to emulate the program in Australia. She said "we are going to start mapping how many diverse roles are moving into partnership businesses." At Pipeline, Sorenson will also speak about customers’ expectations around value from technology spending, and the divide between Australian organisations that have moved to cloud and are going through their second round of digital transformation, and those that are yet to make the leap to cloud. The COVID-driven IT spending bonanza is over. So what now for IT spending? TRA analyst Trevor Clarke shared some macro considerations for Australian IT partners to consider. Watch the video. While the size of IT budgets hasn't changed much, in Clarke's view, he noted a shift in business priorities to operational excellence and that cost management had crept back up to the top of IT leaders’ priority lists. "I think a lot of it at the moment is, ‘Let's get a little bit more smarter cost management in place - more around liquidity and making sure we've got the funds available to do things, particularly as it relates to capital investments, when you have some of the challenges with the cost of capital at the moment and inflation,” Clarke noted.
