Happy Seollal!
3 Reasons the Korean New Year is Wonderful
1. It brings people together!
2. Seollal is a time of reflection, hope, and high spirits.
3. This is a time to pay respects to family members and ancestors.
5 Facts About the Korean New Year
1. Koreans hide their shoes! The belief is if a person’s shoes go missing, it’s because ghosts have taken them away, and bad luck will follow that person for the whole year.
2. Hanging strainers on their walls (bokjori or bamboo strainers), to bring - or “catch” - good luck and fortune.
3. After eating food together, younger members of every family perform a ritual called sebae (새배) or “New Year’s bow” - the act of bowing deeply to show respect to one’s elders. After bowing, the children receive sebae-don (새배돈), good luck money from the elder in an envelope. Sebae and sebae-don always go together and symbolize respect, love and good wishes for the new year ahead. These two rituals are a central part of the new year's celebration!
4. Koreans believe their ancestors visit them on Seollal, so they participate in “charye” or preparing special food to pay tribute to their ancestors.
5. People often wear traditional clothing to celebrate the big day! South Koreans wear a hanbok, usually beautifully embroidered with patterns and colors.
January 22 marks the Korean New Year or “Seollal”!
Seollal is the first day of the Korean calendar and is one of the most important traditional Korean holidays.
The holiday typically lasts 3 days: the day before, the day of, and the day after.
Long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way to measure time. On his birthday, he told the animals there would be a swimming race and the first twelve animals to cross a fast-flowing river would be the winners and would each have a year of the zodiac named after them.
Each year represents a different animal (mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig). This cycle is repeated every 12 years. 2023 is the year of the Water Rabbit!
It is believed the animal representing the year will attribute certain characteristics and qualities to babies born during that time.
