I’ve seen loads of posts from nutrition snobs talking about how ‘evil’ a supermarket roast chickens is due to the ingredients, and that we all ‘should’ be cooking a baked chicken ourselves at home instead because it’s ‘so easy’.

Sure Nutrition Snob Nadia*. If you’re educated, can read, have money, no illness, no physical disability, no cognitive disability, have a working oven, have cooking utensils.

Sure Nutrition Snob Nadia, if we don’t have to work till 6, pick up the kids from after school care, do a grocery shop because the fridge is bare, do soccer pick up, get home, do homework, and put some sort of meal on the table before 10:34pm.

Sure Nutrition Snob Nadia. Absolutely everyone has a spare 1.5 hours to whip up their own bbq chook on a Tuesday night when they’re tired to the bones and their mental health is hanging on by a thread.

So, this is me, actually-qualified-nutritionist Tara just letting you know that you don’t need to fear the supermarket chicken. And don’t follow any Nutritiin Snob Nadia’s on socials if they’re making you feel guilty, because there’s heaps of them out there.

*Sorry to all the Nadia’s IRL. Just chose Nadia as it was a name starting with N 😚

I'm looking for a chips and dip container (small) for school lunch box. The size of a 'le snack' so I can do DIY crackers and dip.

Anyone have one that they can suggest?

Would you feel like eating this massive plate of food? Does the sheer volume put you off eating?? Do you know what each thing on this plate is, or is it a bit of a mystery which makes you cautious?

You know, this is what kids feel like, often. You serve up a delicious butter chicken with rice and veg and put it in front of the kidlets. They sit there and pick at it. Push it around. Whinge and wine. They don’t eat much.

But you see, we often overload our kids plate with way too much food. It can ruin their appetite and overwhelm them. Just like if someone served us this plate.

We try and change things up and add some new healthy ingredients to fuel our munchkins. We add some sneaky corn into your curry but the kids see it from a mile away and are thinking “what’s this gonna taste like?”. “What will the texture be like?”

And then we add to the mix “eat all your dinner or you don’t get any dessert.” PHWOAH. Overload. Pressure. No appetite. Weird new stuff.

If you’re little ones are pushing their food around and not really eating lately, try serving a little less on the plate so that meals aren’t overwhelming. Let them know there’s more in the kitchen if they wish for more. Us adults don’t really dig a plate jam packed full of food. And kids can often see a plate we serve them as being ‘full of food’.

Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Rissoles: These turned out wonderfully and super easy to make. Awesome lunch box food, snack, salad topper, or burger filling!
• 1 cup grated sweet potato
•1 cup raw blended caulifower (approx 1/4 of a cauliflower, florets, blended)
• 2 slices of grainy bread, toasted then blended
• 1 cup grated cheese
• 2 eggs (beaten)
----
Mix the blended cauliflower, grated sweet potato, cheese and bread crumbs (toast) in a large bowl. Add two beaten eggs and mix well to combine.
Scoop into balls and place evenly on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
Bake in a 180 degree Celsius oven for 30 minutes (you can make larger rissoles which will take longer)
Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese while still hot.

Supermarket tour: kids milk

26/02/2024

How bloody good are frozen veggies, eh?

Back in the day, they were the scum of the supermarket shelves. But no more. These babies are picked and frozen straight away, locking in all the nutrients.

Stock up. Save money. Save time. And yes, they’re wonderfully healthy

Serve it differently: I maintain interest by simply serving the same food, a different way.

Tonight I used a small cup as a mold to serve up a ‘rice mountain’ and Miss 9’s eyes popped out of her head and she was so delighted! Despite eating rice several times a week, even for breakfast. She ate it all up.

You don’t always have to serve new dishes. Do your old dishes in new ways.

- how good are frozen veg for busy nights, eh?

- store bought chicken rissole things pan fried and added teriyaki sauce at the end.

We are absolutely sweltering here through a heatwave and a few local friends have commented that their kids won't eat at the moment and that they are concerned. But if you think about it, us usually slow our food intake riiiiiight down on really hot days. We go off our food a little, and the kidlets are no different. It takes energy to chew, digest and absorb food, so naturally when hot, our body doesn't want to expend any energy. So don't be too concerned.

There are a few things you can do:
*Keep up the water intake.
*Make smoothies with your choice of milk, fruit and some sort of protein like yoghurt or peanut butter.
*Make icypoles with the left over smoothie mix.
*Serve cold dinners like sushi, salads with cold roast veg, sandwhiches and wraps, quiche.
* A pick plate of an assortment of cold stuff like cheese, cold meats, veggie sticks and dips is always a winner

Once the weather cools, you will find their appetite will likely pick up, and they may actually eat more than usual as their body's way of regulating and balancing it all out.

It’s our last day raising money for kids’ mental health this month! Every day in November we are walking for the Walk For Kids’ Mental Health challenge. Did you know, 1 in 7 Aussie kids are currently experiencing a mental illness?

One day, I hope we can share our story, struggles and challenges, to raise awareness of the difficulties kiddos are facing (because mental health issues don’t just affect adults), but it’s not my story to tell, and social media can be a horrible beast at times. So for now we are walking every day and asking for donations, which will help get mindfulness programs into schools.

🦖🌈💕here’s the link to donate, Even just a couple of dollarbucks will do! https://www.walkforkidsmentalhealth.org.au/fundraisers/taraleong?fbclid=PAAab6fSkQf7YDPxHyE-LwT3F9wLhoPrr4ZQjKMCZ7QOUjXRERB_FCZ8oBVrE_aem_AVrSRSSfD5H3Yl77roJf04XGFFPYVG3Tr13V7UerBATSUwbfEsP0JXIMgfHfvMaF85g

You know, it’s ok to surrender the parental control and allow children to choose how much carrot they want on their fish burger?

They may even surprise you and put on more than you would have given them. They may even enjoy it a whole lot more because they simply got to choose.

Pictured: miss carrot-hating 9 yr old loading up her fish burger with way more carrot than I would have given her, and actually eating the whole darned thing

14/10/2023

It’s important to remember that as much as we want to protect our kids, there comes a time where they are just ready to use that knife or peeler or other seemingly dangerous kitchen item!

When is the age you let them do this stuff? I don’t know. Only you, as their parent know.

I do know that it’s awesome if you know they are capable and ready, and let them go for it, it will only be a positive step towards enjoying, embracing and learning about food.

It’s often harder to let them do it. It takes up our time and concentration to supervise and would just be quicker if we peeled the darned thing for them. But it’s so so important that we allow them to learn, themselves.

When school goes back after summer holidays, it can often be helpful to serve dinner a little earlier than usual. This is because the kiddos are often hungry and tired from school and feeding them too late can:
- lead to the hangries before dinner
- fill up on afternoon snacks while they wait for dinner but then be full from the snacks and not eat much dinner
- make it difficult for them to eat dinner as they’re just too tired to sit and concentrate, then they’re hungry at bed time or through the night.

You can serve dinner a little earlier (although not always possible, I know) and then serve a snack before bed.
