Zephyr Movement
Tessa is the heart and soul of Zephyr Movement. Get comfy, read the journal entries and share. Welcome, I'm Tessa. You are not alone.
I've worked in healthcare for the last ten years and wanted to create a soft space for people to share, learn and grow. It appears we only have to be paying attention to the world to feel anxious and overwhelmed. Slip off your shoes, get a cuppa, read our journal entries and share your thoughts.
This is one of my favourite song lyrics and has been up on the clinic wall since we opened. I love that it reminds me life is meant to be messy and can be beautiful all at the same time. What does it remind you of?

Something I hear often in clinic is, "How can I be struggling this much when I've always been such a strong person?" Sometimes, it is as simple as opening to a broader definition of what strong means? Yes strength is needed to push through hard times and keep moving.
Can we also stop for a moment and value the strength it takes to reach out for help? To allow ourselves to open up vulnerably? To choose our need to rest when we are scared to let other down? To show up for all of our emotions not just the ones society tells us are acceptable! Gentle strength is still strength. Leave a šŖ below if you're expanding your definition of strength?
What tools do you have in your resilience took kit? Are you perpetually in burn out? Perhaps you need to learn the tools of gentle resilience?
Breathing is essential to life and so it will come as no surprise that it is a tool which can be used to facilitate many things in the body! Here are just some of our favourite ways to use breathing at our clinic. Let us know in the comments below which you're most curious about? If you'd like to learn more check out our online program in the link in our bio.
Sometimes complex emotions and less than pleasant experiences are less than easy to talk about. Whilst talk therapy can be incredibly therapeutic, there are times when we either can't verbalise what happened or how we feel. In this instance, it's important to know there are loads of 'non-talk' or low talk therapy options. Here are some of the offerings at Zephyr Movement explained.
Only you know what is going to work best for you and there are so many options to choose from. Hyperventilation techniques are common in breath work practices. Often this practice is used to produce an adrenaline release. This can feel amazing and there is nothing 'wrong' with it. However, when we hyperventilate we drastically lower our carbon dioxide levels in a quick period of time and we all start at a different baseline.
Carbon dioxide levels have been shown to relate to states of panic. Think about the classic example of hyperventilating into a paper bag. The idea is re-breathing some of the lost carbon dioxide and seeing your rate and volume of breathing to help calm down.
Recent evidence suggests, people with panic disorders may benefit from carbon dioxide (CO2) tolerance training. This is at the opposite end of the spectrum to hyperventilation techniques. If you suffer with anxiety and/or panic attacks make sure you ask your breath work practitioner about any hyperventilation techniques or perhaps ask for CO2 tolerance techniques instead. We offer a self-guided online program via the link in our bio if you are interested to learn more.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to breathing. Breathing is however, too integral in our overall wellbeing and health to not be informed before making any big changes.

Today I didnāt feel my best. I had commitments and didnāt have my best to give. I thought about rescheduling butā¦. (With a little encouragement ššš½) I showed up as I was, less than my best and guess what? It was enough. In fact it was more than enough! There is so much pressure to be perfect in this digital age. Everything is recordable. We can be held more accountable. There is pressure to get things right and do things as best as we can. Whilst itās easier to retreat and sometimes what is needed, today I chose differently. I chose connection. I chose vulnerability. I chose imperfection. I chose to build evidence in my life that wherever I am at today is enough!
Leave a š§” below if youāve shown up even when it was less than easy. Wherever you are at today I know one thing for sureā¦Youāre doing an incredible job of navigating some really hard things!
Nervous system regulation is having the ability to transition between stressed states (fight/flight/freeze) and relaxed states (rest/digest) consistently throughout the day. The way we can transition is via the tools of our nervous system - sensory information. If you are feeling stuck in a stressed state tune into what information is taking priority at that time:
š§” Is it overwhelming or stressful internal sensations? (looping thoughts, heart racing, chest tightness etc)
OR
š§”Is it stressful or overwhelming sensations externally? (busy environments, people yelling etc)
Then try to tune into sensations that focus on the opposite. Eg) internal overwhelm - what can I see, hear, smell in my environment?
Eg) External overwhelm- what can I hear, feel or taste in my body? (Breathing, heart rate etc)
Tears almost always mean overwhelm. Donāt assume someone is sad if theyāre crying and try to ācheer them upā. We cry with overwhelm of many different emotions. The best thing to do is to check in with the your own discomfort you may experience with someone being upset, resist the urge to āfixā, problem solve or give advice and just be present with them. This can look like validating their feelings too with phrases like: āYeah that does sound tough.ā Or āThat sucksā. Might seem simple but it helps people to calm down more quickly and effectively if theyāre in the presence of someone who knows how to calm themselves and allow them to feel through their discomfort in their own time.
In the same way sensitive people have had more practice of tuning into their environments. Perhaps we could listen to the insights theyāve learned over many years of practicing attunement.
In the same way perhaps pause before dismissing someone as too sensitive. They may have more information to make an accurate conclusion in a certain scenario or situation.
Letās be grateful for the sensitive ones. They are seers of the unseen. Itās less easy to reveal a reality that is more subtle to some.
This is a point where science and faith converge. Both are ways of making the unseen seen. A hypothesis is fiction until proven as fact and faith is an illusion until felt first hand.
Where are my fellow sensitive souls at? You are not the problem beautiful people. š§”
A beautiful friend said this to me this morning and I thought it was worth resharing!
In the words of I too am a recovering perfectionist! I make so many more mistakes now than I ever have because Iāve tried giving myself the freedom to be good enough instead of needing to be perfect!
Sure the self critic inside me has been well trained. It still comments on how āmessyā I am doing but the important things I try to remind myself of are:
ā”ļøAt least I am in the arena risking getting the sh*t kicked out of me. Life is for living and living is messy. Sitting on the sidelines might keep you clean but itās sure as hell less fun than playing the game!
ā”ļøWhilst Iām a big advocate for trying to shed comparison-itis, itās often true that where we are now albeit messy and imperfect is where past us or someone else has been dreaming of. Gives a fresh slice of gratitude to enjoy!
Pop an emoji below that represents the messiness in your life right now? Mine would be š„“!

I can already breathe. Itās not that hardā¦is it? I get this question so often. The simple answer is if youāre alive, well done you are breathing! What is Collateral Beauty? One of my favourite movies is Collateral Beauty. It is heart wrenching, hope inducing and all kinds of beautiful. The first time I watched it, something in my soul recognised truth but I couldnāt have deeply explained the concept behind the name. That moment came years later when I would wholehear...
