My First Bookshelf, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is one of two Penobscot County affiliates of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Since starting in March 2023, and with generous help from the Irving Foundation, the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and the State of Maine (by way of the Maine State Library), we’ve been able to give over 21,000 books to Penobscot County children under age 5. Every registered child receives a free book each month mailed directly to them. We currently have 2,608 children registered with 317 who have graduated upon turning age 5.

As Father's Day approaches, let's remember the incredible impact fathers have on shaping our lives and inspiring our dreams. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library started with a simple idea inspired by her father's love and his inability to read. Help us continue this legacy and ensure every child has access to books.
