Yawning Mama
Patterns for Parenthood! Digital PDF & Projector Sewing Patterns for modern maternity & postpartum
Yawning Mama started in 2018 by sewing custom maternity and breastfeeding clothing. Then we switched to selling the designs as PDF sewing patterns. We often get messages from people really wanting us to sew for them again! So we added a commissions page to the website. Every month we plan on accepting a couple custom orders.
I asked AI to show me the most perfect sewing machine. We've got a thread coming from the sky. A doohickey on the turning wheel that will hit that useless thread spool on top - or does the thread spool spin too?
Well folks, I don't think AI is going to be sewing for us anytime soon.
Haven't been posting much lately! My womb that once created life is now trying to kill me. 😬🤕 So I'm getting a hysterectomy in two weeks! I'll be taking a break for most of the summer. The website will still be up, and I'll be around to answer questions.
Finally felt well enough today to make these recovery underwear. This is a pattern I just drafted up, for anyone who is getting abdominal surgery. I'm excited to try them out! The front is two layers - the outer layer folds at the waist and forms both the lining and the gusset. This means no elastic across the front, and the only seam is very low and it's encased by the lining. The side seams are also hidden. 👏
Sadly, I don't think I'll feel well enough to release these before the surgery. But at least they'll be well tested in the coming months!
Love my space! I've always had a hard time being creative when surrounded by mess.
New parents only have so much time to sew! In the new Adroit pattern tutorial, we explain how to get your invisible zippers truly invisible - without ironing!
The Adroit Dress and Blouse is live!
I worked really hard to get the fit of this pattern just right. It was tweaked right up until the last minute! Which means not very many pictures yet, but you can rest assured that the fit will be as close to perfect as a woven pattern can get.
This pattern was designed with working mamas in mind. Zippers can be inserted into the princess seams, and the lining is switched to a modesty panel. This allows you to have full access to both breasts without showing your belly or chest. We explain in the tutorial how to get truly invisible zippers without ironing!
The bodice is fitted, but has enough ease to accommodate engorgement or portable pumps. Two darts in the back add shaping, but can be skipped for a roomier garment. The armscye and sleeve are oversized to allow for a full range of movement.
It's been two years since we released our first sewing patterns! The bra patterns are going to get a couple of sizes added to the low end next week. 👏👏
Does anyone know?
Just added a few more things to the sample sale, including the show stopper dress!

People often wonder what happens to my prototypes and the garments I sew up for the tutorials. Sometimes I make them in my size. Occasionally I have a model in mind and make it in their size. If the sample fits really weird, it gets trashed. The rest get put in my sample sale tote, to one day list on the website.
The Everything Tee has a lot of options! So for this pattern tutorial, I made 4 bodices and 7 bottoms. Three of the bottoms were basted onto bodices, then removed for the next round. The discarded tee bottoms were turned into these skirts for my kiddo!
Stop with your needle in the fabric, lift your presser foot, then slide the zipper past. On some machines, you'll need to manually lift the foot past the normal stop.
You can use two zippers to make a double-pull zipper!
Last chance to get the new Parenthoodie pattern while it's on sale! It's going up tomorrow.
Sergers are great and will elevate your makes. Plus, they cut the edges off your seams!
For your first one, I recommend buying new, not used. Sergers have a lot of settings and k***s, and there's a bit of a learning curve. If you buy used, you may spend a lot of time thinking there's something wrong with you when there's something wrong with the machine. Plus most new sergers come with classes or online video instruction.
Sometimes even I don't understand my notes. Remove seam allowance from bottom? 🧐 Guess it made sense when I wrote it, because it sure doesn't now 🤣
That fit 😍 Just a couple more weeks and you can make your own Adroit.
In honor of the new Parenthoodie pattern, here I am back in 2018 sewing in a baby carrier I made! This was a wrap onbuhimo that I drafted up. Got in over my head and had to borrow a friend's industrial machine to finish it! None of my machines at the time would sew through that foam 😅
Our newest sewing pattern is live! The parenthoodie is for all genders and works for maternity, breastfeeding, front carry, back carry, and tandem carry. And it's easy to sew - promise! You'll be a zipper pro after making this pattern.
Parenthoodie release is delayed! There's a snow storm here and the power has been flickering for a few hours.
I think the babywearing panel has enough room 🤣
Love how this pattern is coming along! My focus when designing it was fit, function, and simplicity. The result is an all-gender hoodie that is easy to sew and fits throughout parenthood.
The Parenthoodie will be releasing on Friday!
Where I started versus where I'm at!

A peek at the new Adroit pattern options!
The most intimidating part of making your own bras is the straps! Our tutorials explain how to make your own from scratch.
If you're not up for that, you can buy ones all ready to go! We cut these at the perfect length for our nursing bras, and added the in the nursing clips. That's a good 6 steps eliminated from each bra you make!
We've just sold out of the black straps. Should we make some more?
Are you team Line Drawings or team Pictures?
All our tutorials feature real photographs. I think it's easier for beginners to make out what needs to be done. It also gives me a chance to make ALL THE VERSIONS and make sure the pattern comes together just right. For our initial bra pattern release in 2022, I had to make over a dozen bras! They are still worn daily!
Our first sample sale is live! I'll be adding things in over the next few weeks. One of the items in the first round is this lovely Medusa inspired gown!

Still working on getting the runway collection ready to sell! Check back tomorrow 🤞🤞 And yes, this mushroom cape will be one of them!
Today is the day! This afternoon I'm going to post the runway looks for sale 🤩 Comment below if you want a tag when they go live!
How long have you been sewing?
Pictured is a maternity skirt I made back in 2016! It was my absolute favorite. This is also the last picture of my bump! I gave birth a couple days later.
I've been sewing since I was a teenager, back in the late 90s. Mainly quilting back then! Didn't start making clothing until around 10 years later.
Who is Yawning Mama?
I often get asked about the origins of this business. So what made me decide to start a sewing business?
Like many teens in the 90's, my first job was at a grocery store as a bagger, then cashier. One day, the pharmacy was short staffed. They asked me to go and work the pharmacy cash register. Let me tell you, I thought I was the bees knees working in that pharmacy. 😎 I went home full of air and determined to become a pharmacy technician.
Ten years later I'd long since reached my goal and was becoming jaded about my future. Pharmacy technicians do make good money, but there isn't any room for advancement. Usually the only way to get a raise is to switch companies, which I'd done several times already. It was a stressful job and my health was suffering.
I'd always wanted to be a pharmacy tech, but I'd wanted even more to be a stay at home mom. So after meeting my husband in 2011 we started thinking of ways I could make money and stay at home. We ended up starting a sort of reselling business on eBay and in 2015 I left the healthcare world.
