Today I'm releasing a new single. It’s a re-recording of the song ”In My Home”, a co-write with Austin songwriter Jeff Talmadge, a comment on the innocent victims of wars around the world. This new version appears on an album put out by Italian label Appaloosa Records called “Shahida, Tracce di Liberta” (“Shahida, Songs Of Freedom"), a fundraising album for refugees, especially women. The track includes my usual Santa Fe gang of musicians plus special guest musicians including two players from Uzbekistan and a young refugee from Ukraine named Vladi Vasylenko who recites and sings in both Ukrainian and Russian. A link to listen to the song is in the first comment.

Below is further information about the Shahida project and the
track ...

The album “Shahida, Tracce di libertà” (Shahiha, Tracks of Freedom) was released by Appaloosa Records on World Refugee Day 2023 in collaboration with Rome’s Centro Astalli (the Italian headquarters of the Jesuit Refugee Service) and it features over a hundred artists gathered by Andrea Parodi and Claudio Zonta. The project brought together artists from different countries and genres, who set out on a musical journey in which the beauty
of words and music transcends all borders. The title chosen for this new music project, Shahida, is a woman’s name. In Arabic it means ‘witness’, and it is also the name of the Pakistani hockey national team player who died in a shipwreck off the coast of Steccato di Cutro. 94 people died alongside her, 35 of whom were children. Shahida is a symbol for all women currently fighting for freedom, it’s a musical adventure on which singers,
musicians, actors, and writers embarked: over a hundred artists took part in this project with words and melodies that share stories, journeys, and faces from all over the world. The resulting musical landscape is as diverse as the group of artists that created it, among which Jaime Michaels, Jono Manson, Scarlet Rivera, Thom Chacon, Eileen Rose, Fabrizio Poggi, Antonella Ruggiero, Michele Gazich, Luigi Maieron, Carrie Rodriguez and many others.

Hey, tribe!
You hear me talk here about my friend Jono Manson mostly in relation to his producing my last ten albums … but wait, there’s more!
Jono is a brilliant songwriter and singer who embarks on his first post pandemic major tour tonight at the Blue Door in Oklahoma City … he will be out there criss crossing the country for the next month playing his own solo shows as well as opening a string of concerts for his old friends, Blues Traveler … try to catch him if you can … Jono is a veritable powerhouse performer … hey, have I ever lied to you?

This morning’s welcome invasion …

15/07/2023

I watched Monterey Pop this morning … bunches o’ damned hippies and their music … I wound up having a really emotional reaction to the whole vibe … partially because I recently found out that someone who was very important in my life back then had died … we had not seen each other in over a half century but it still broke my heart to hear she had passed … my God, we were so young back then when we believed that love could someday rule … the world keeps trying to kill that but I still believe in kindness … I will always believe in kindness … and that damned hippie music 🌼

there are some nice reviews coming in for "how to shine" ... here's one from John Apice at Americana Highways ... i love that he mentions tim hardin, mickey newberry & greg trooper ... as for bobby darin (amy), that's actually a really sweet tune (link in the first comment)

"I find Jaime Michaels (acoustic guitar) to be a singer-songwriter with the melodic intuition & lyrical instincts of artists like Tim Hardin, Mickey Newberry, Bobby Darin (“Amy”), & Greg Trooper (who Jaime covers with “This I’d Do”). His voice is warm, the showcase tight & the musicians bring their best to this showcase.

There’s poignancy, melancholy, tall tales, short tales, clever lines, wise lines & memorable melodies. “I may not be the wisest one, but I’ll be laughing when I’m done.” Everything is superb. A well-balanced showcase by a skillful artist who can tempt the ears with every melody. Each is carefully constructed with a folky point but drawn with a broad brush.

This 11-cut CD How To Shine (Dropped April 22–Appaloosa Records) was produced by Jono Manson (electric tenor guitar/electric guitar/vocals) & recorded in NM, TX, NY & 3 Italian locations! This set includes a beautiful colorful 20pp lyrical insert. An impressive package.

Michaels is consistent with his songcraft. Maybe at times optimistic? Maybe, but maybe that’s what music needs.

Many of the songs are pure Americana (“In My Home”) but nothing reads like it couldn’t be understood by anyone, anywhere, no matter their culture or heritage. “You might think you know me; you might think you do, maybe you just recognize, the part of me that is you.” Heavy.

Finally, “The Fisherman,” had 5 writers but one is Genoa’s Gian Piero Reverberi — an incredible musician out of Italy who has worked with top-tier Italian artists & issued several albums in the mid-70s of his own that were even played on NYC’s progressive rock radio WNEW-FM. This gives Michaels a little Euro-flavor & it’s done well.”
