We are living in an ageing society. With the rising trend toward nuclear families, most retirees around the world are leading lives minus the domestic warmth of the traditional extended family.
Hence, senior citizens worldwide have sought to engage themselves in various activities in order to maintain physical, mental and emotional health. And painting is one such activity that has gained increasing popularity.
There are many health benefits to be gained from painting, but we will just focus on four key benefits in this posting.
Therapeutic Benefits – Painters enter a world of their own as they create, and this allows them to detach themselves from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Painting is a meditative act – it takes you out of yourself, freeing yourself from your physical limitations. This means you are only focusing on the present and on the artwork in front of you as you paint, freeing your mind from worries and intrusive thoughts.
One interesting study by a psychologist and neuroscientist, Kelly Lambert, suggests that painting may alleviate depression and anxiety by stimulating parts of the brain affected by depression. Art can be a healing act, a balm for the soul and the mind.
There are also cases where art has helped with physical rehabilitation as well. For instance, Renoir and Gauguin are two famous examples of artists, who, through painting’s transcendental bliss, were able to move atrophied hands, experiencing a remarkable temporary healing.
Releasing emotions through artwork is a cathartic experience for many people, at all ages. In fact, many therapists suggest painting or drawing as a treatment for patients who have suffered psychologically painful encounters. Letting out emotions by painting promotes healing through abstract emotional expression. This is why psychologists often prescribe art therapy for patients who have suffered psychological trauma: it helps to release emotions in a safe, non-threatening environment.
Unleashed Creativity – Believe it or not, we all have the makings of a creative genius inside us. Unleashing your creativity allows you to expand your abilities and gain self confidence. The joy of painting comes less from the quality of the painting and more from the satisfaction of creating something amazing yourself. After all, art is an expression of your personality and creativity, which is what makes each piece unique.
Concentration & Perseverance – Creating a painting from start to finish takes time and dedication. During this process mistakes and challenges are constantly being made and overcome. Sustained effort on this journey helps improve your ability to concentrate and persevere through new challenges. Taking on a new painting can feel daunting at first, but it’s a highly gratifying experience that will have you wanting more.
Painting Strengthens Memory - Painting boosts memory recall and works to sharpen the mind through conceptual visualization and implementation. People who frequently engage in creative work such as writing, painting, and drawing have less chance of developing memory loss illnesses, like dementia and Alzheimer’s, as they age. Indeed, painting is an all-brain exercise, strengthening the mind and triggering dopamine activity in the brain.
My long-time friend Ross Tuck, who lives in Australia, is currently in his eighties. He took up painting about four years ago under strange circumstances. In 2019, Ross Tuck was wrestling with severe pain, while waiting for a hip replacement. By chance, he received from his wife Marie a wildlife colouring book given by her grand-son, and started drawing. The rest is history.
As a man of the land in New Zealand, his love for the outdoors and animals has always been part of his psyche, and this is clearly reflected in his art works as a self-taught artist.
His first canvas was a scene painted via video of forest scene with reflected light in July 2019. Since then, he has created many paintings of NZ landscapes, mustering sheep, cattle, wild horses, various jungle animals and South African wildlife.
Spurred by his intense love for the African Tuskers, he was hellbent on bringing all the past and present Big Tuskers to life via his brush and paint. To date, Tucky has completed painting 16 Tuskers, and is raring to explore other challenging creations.
Below please find a video celebrating Ross Tuck’s artistic works.
Ray Tomlinson was not deterred by those who ridiculed his idea of sending mails through the air. Thanks to his perseverance, the incredible new era of email communication dawned upon us.
He sent out the first email in 1971.

Eminent French philosopher Voltaire who died about 230 years ago, said this: " I have chosen to be happy because it is good for my health."
We all want to be in the pink of health. But sometimes there may be persistent aches and pains, or some irritating albeit minor health issues which the doctor (Western medicine) cannot resolve. Beyond the aches, pain and diseases, what is your body telling you? Have you been ignoring your body's messages to you about your life? And what if your body can speak to you through a deck of Medical Intuitive cards? I had a one-hour session with Gillian this morning. It was very interesting and useful. Book your time with Gillian if you are interested.
Go for gold, go for the flute!!
Six months ago, I took up the bamboo flute as a serious student. And I am still enjoying the learning process a great deal.
If you are keen to learn a musical instrument, I would strongly recommend that you choose the flute. Why ? Because it is the oldest and the most beautiful musical instrument. The flute is considered the oldest extant musical instrument at hand. The oldest possible flute, dated to be around 43,000 years old, was discovered in Slovenia old. As a beautiful musical instrument, the flute had been mentioned in the Sumerian cuneiform tablet that dated back to 2600 BCE. The flute was also mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Bible. At present, the flute is part of an array of instruments required for chamber music, orchestras, wind ensembles, military bands, and even marching bands.
Advantages of Flute Playing
One great advantage the flute can boast of is its incredible versatility and portability as a musical instrument. Its small size makes it one of the most portable musical instruments. If you are a flutist, you can play in any musical ensemble. This gives you enough options to harness your skill as a musician.
Secondly, learning how to play the flute involves your whole body. First, you need to adopt a good posture to be able to play it well. You can improve your body coordination as you need to coordinate your hands, mouth, ears, and eyes together to play the flute well. You also need to coordinate your muscles so that you can play it properly. You will need keen eyes as you read the music sheets while playing the flute. You also need to blow into the flute’s mouthpiece while fi*****ng the notes. Overall, you can enhance your reflexes and body coordination.
Thirdly, it strengthens your lungs because you need to breathe in and breathe out regularly as you play it. As a windpipe instrument, the flute is played through blowing air into a mouthpiece. Naturally, this gives your lungs and diaphragm a respiratory work out, making your core a lot stronger. Thus, your lungs will be well exercised when you play the flute. With more air coming in and out of your lungs, your body gets oxygenated while working out your diaphragm and lungs.
Fourthly, you will develop finger dexterity because you will be using your fingers to play it well. The flute also requires finger dexterity and breathing coordination.
Fifthly, you build focus and concentration attention when playing the flute. Furthermore, it has been shown that listening as well as playing music has a positive effect on your memory power. Hence flautists and other musicians have higher memory power. Finally, the beautiful sounds of the flute provide a soothing effect on the mind and help to relieve the tensions and stresses of modern day living.
The ‘Indian Bansuri’ of India, which is an important part of the Indian classical music for many years, has been a special musical instrument of Lord Krishna and a source of healing for many.
Playing the bansuri is deemed to help improve the energy flow through the body and leads to spiritual awakening of the soul. The regular breath movements done while playing the instrument is similar to that of pranayam breathing movements. Hence, bansuri playing has been linked to meditation as well.
These are my maiden attempts at neurographic art, an art form that promotes emotional and mental wellness by allowing the subconscious to guide the drawing and colouring of shapes formed by the intersection of lines. The process of colouring -via water colour and/or colour pencils - is very therapeutic indeed. After the process, one is relieved of the emotional stress that one has been under, and one gets to look at a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours, which uplift the soul undoubtedly. All of us should try this art. Call it doodling or whatever, it doesn't matter. As long as it makes you feel so much better at the end of it all.
