The Desert River Church
We are a church community that meets and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.
We believe the bible, and the Messiah it proclaims, and that all are invited to the table. The Desert River Church, is a house church that meets in Lake Orion, Michigan on Sunday morning, and throughout the week. We take a deep look at what Jesus wants to do in our hearts, families, and city, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and extend an invitation to all to the table.
In todays lectionary text from John 5, Jesus visits a pool near a sheep gate during a festival. There was a belief in that day and in that area that every now and again a spirit - maybe God - would stir the water and those in the water at the time would experience healing.
Jesus sees a sick man that had been there a long time and asked him if he wanted to get better. Interesting question. He was at the pool by the sheep gate after all. He responded by saying that of course he wanted to get better, but that he had no one to help him get in the pool when it was stirred.
The man’s proximity to the pool - the activity of the Spirit - was not related whatsoever to his getting better. It seems that this man was right next to where God was at work - as healing is the work of God - yet had been there ill for some time.
Closeness in proximity to the work of God does not necessarily equate to involvement or participation in that work. It just seems like it doesn’t. But it also seems like Jesus pulls people into that work. Involvement and participation. It just seems like something that happens.
We will not be meeting at LOHOP for worship tomorrow. We will be having breakfast at Chad and Raya’s.
Dm us for the address.
Don’t let a legalistic view of scripture sideline you - or distract you - from participating in what God is up to in the world right now.
Instead, respond to the invitation to participate with the Divine in the ongoing reconciliation of the world to God’s self.
For the next while - we don’t have a timeline on this - we aren’t going to be live-streaming our worship services. For those who don’t live in the area, I’m so sorry, but it is something we feel we need to break from. Message us to figure out a way you can still participate. For those of you in the area, I encourage you to bring your body and be with the community to worship on Sunday mornings.
We’ll be talking about some cool things in the morning.
Snow day! We will not be meeting today 1/2/2022. Enjoy your day!
