Our veterinary surgeons may be smarter than the rest of us… but they are no stronger when it comes to falling in love with dogs in the workplace!

Thank you, Dr. Kersten Martin del Campo, for giving this sweet shelter dog a home!

Do you wonder if high quality, high volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) means cutting corners and poor outcomes? This six-year study of 113,906 spay/neuter surgeries performed in a Florida spay/neuter clinic says no!

In fact, researchers found that the canine mortality rate was lower than that reported for hysterectomy in women, and the overall mortality rate of cats was similar to that found in human surgical practice.

“This is a stunning validation of the expertise and skill of spay/neuter veterinarians,” said lead researcher Dr. Julie Levy of the Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida.

We always knew our HQHVSN surgeons were the best!

Looking back in time… this study predicted where we are today in terms of intake in shelters and how it’s driven by the pandemic spay/neuter stoppage and why we do what we do!

“In total, 190,818 fewer surgeries were performed by the 212 studied clinics in the 24 months from January 2020 through December 2021 than would be expected had 2019 levels been maintained. If a similar pattern was experienced by other spay/neuter providers in the US, it would suggest there is a deficit of more than 2.7 million spay/neuter surgeries that animal welfare organizations have yet to address.”

“High quality” comes before “high volume,” but the volume is still pretty impressive. 👀

As a board member of the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations, I had the opportunity to speak at their event at the Humane Society of Sarasota County last week. This was a networking and sharing event for animal welfare leaders on the West Coast of Florida.

I spoke about the veterinary shortage and spay/neuter backlog, how it’s affecting animal welfare, and what we can do about it. Yes, there ARE things we can do!!!

We will be holding another event for the East Coast organizations on June 7th at the Humane Society of Broward County. Here’s the link to join us:

“The only reason that overpopulation is a problem is because there is not enough spay and neuter happening,” Lee said. “[There is] not enough education behind it, not enough resources.”

Why we do what we do.

It’s so gratifying to see cats get this kind of attention - it’s a full-service, state-of-the-art, well thought-out facility, headed up by managing partner Rick Ducharme and with a commitment to affordability.

They’re opening a second location soon in nearby Duluth, GA. Truly blown away!

Slomba Shelter Solutions was excited to join so many shelter and rescue colleagues at Lifeline Animal Project’s impressive new building in Fulton County, Georgia, for the PetSmart Charities Summit.

We met some wonderful people and learned a lot from the statistics shared by PetSmart Charities.

Thanks to PetSmart Charities for putting on this event, to Rebecca Guinn at Lifeline for hosting it, and to Dr. Sara Pizano of Team Shelter USA for giving an electrifying talk as usual!

Turning off the dance music soundtrack for a minute and diving into something serious: The national nonprofit veterinary shortage is creating dire bottlenecks in spay/neuter services, putting hundreds of thousands of animals at risk, according to this new study from Petco Love and the Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida.

This is what drives us every day to bring spay/neuter solutions to shelters across the country!

Amber Strydom, DVM is one of the hardest working veterinary surgeons we know. She works extra hard when she’s in the US so she can volunteer her time in under resourced countries around the world. At the end of the month she goes to Ukraine!

Please check out World Tails and consider making a donation to support the incredible work Dr. Strydom does internationally!
