We will always remember those we lost.

We will always appreciate the first responders and rescue workers who risked their lives to help.

We will always support the members of the military who continue to serve, defend, and protect.

On this anniversary and every day, we aspire to learn from those who serve, to emulate their commitment to others, and to appreciate the bonds that knit us together.

The Equity Beat: Old Economy Stocks Aging Like Fine Wine | Brown Advisory 15/08/2023

“I’m no wine connoisseur, but I can appreciate that fine wines tend to improve with age.” In his latest Equity Beat, Eric Gordon investigates the value of “aged”—i.e., “old economy”—companies and highlights their recent resurgence to market leadership, despite the dominance of the Sensational Seven and newer technologies such as generative AI. While the manufacturing sector continues to contract, Eric explores what we can learn from these more mature industries and shares insights from recent earnings calls.

The Equity Beat: Old Economy Stocks Aging Like Fine Wine | Brown Advisory Unlike my good friends who frequent Baltimore’s finest dining establishments about as often as the division-leading Orioles win (you know who you are), I would never be confused for a wine connoisseur. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Halcyon, Kate is passionate about driving impact through entrepreneurship to solve the pressing social and environmental problems of our time. We walked away with insights about why Washington, D.C. is special, evolving as a leader, creating a competitive advantage through impact, democratizing entrepreneurship, and our shared belief in the power of serendipity—as well as a measure of inspiration. As our series unfolds, we look forward to bringing together thought leaders across disciplines who are making a difference in Washington, D.C.

Our ongoing partnership with The Institute for Responsible Citizenship, led by Dr. Bill Keyes, continues to inspire us. Recently, members of the Brown Advisory team gathered for a special dinner with IRC scholars in Washington, DC—including two of our current summer analysts, Jesiah Matthews and Chris Wright. We have the benefit of working together with several IRC alums who are now Brown Advisory colleagues, including Frank Godfrey III, Pierce Alston and Max Morant.

The IRC selects some of America’s best and brightest African American male college students for an intensive two-summer program in Washington, DC. During their time in the Institute, the scholars live together on a college campus, work at high-level internships in their fields of interest, study economic and constitutional principles, meet privately with prominent public and private sector leaders, participate in professional development workshops, enjoy a variety of social activities, and encourage each other to pursue their highest and noblest ambitions.

In a continuation of our NOW series on the energy transition, Erika Pagel sits down with Joe Dominguez, CEO of Constellation, the leading operator of nuclear power plants in the US. Joe and Erika discuss progress in shifting to a lower carbon economy, where nuclear fits in, promising innovations, and what it will take to get to net zero by 2050.

Congratulations to Brown Advisory board member Christine Fox, who was awarded an honorary degree from Johns Hopkins University during its recent Commencement ceremony. Ms. Fox was recognized for her trailblazing national security career, during which she studied military operations and the role of technology. Now a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins University - Applied Physics Laboratory, she was often the first woman to serve in male-dominated roles and environments, including at the Department of Defense, where she was appointed acting deputy secretary of defense in 2013, making her, at the time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the Pentagon.

We are very pleased to announce the launch our U.S. Sustainable Value Fund under our Dublin UCITS umbrella. The Fund joins our suite of sustainable funds that are available to institutional investors in the UK, Europe and Asia regions and is governed by Article 8 of the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). It follows a successful US mutual fund launch in February for our US Large-Cap Sustainable Value Strategy.

The launch of this new fund is the result of our belief that the vacuum of strategies at the intersection of sustainability and value has created an unmet market need. It will be managed by Michael Poggi and embodies our proprietary fundamental and ESG research capabilities in a market with limited offerings in this space.

Equity Beat: In Consideration of the Macro | Brown Advisory 26/04/2023

We are often asked how our portfolio managers take macroeconomic factors into account when managing portfolios. As bottom-up stock pickers, we focus on investing in high-quality businesses and use a variety of methods to analyze the impact of macro factors on each holding. In his latest Equity Beat, Eric Gordon explores what this means in practice.
