Last weekend, Mass Poetry sent six teens to Washington D.C. to participate in Brave New Voices, an international youth poetry festival. While there, our teens got to compete with teams from all over the country, participate in workshops, and attend panel discussions. We would like to thank Crystal Valentine, Anthony Febo, and Briana Cohen for traveling down to D.C. with our teens and being incredible coaches.

The teens competed against 16 teams from across the nation, with Meta4Houston from Houston, Texas winning the final slam poetry competition. The Mass Poetry team was able to secure a first place win in the second bout of semifinals, marking a high of the weekend. The teens found the entire experience transformative and inspiring, with coaches noting how the teen poets really stepped into themselves during the festival.

Congrats to the whole team; we could not be prouder of their performances and participation during the event. This was the first team Mass Poetry has sent to the Brave New Voices Festival. We are so happy to be able to support our teens and give them the opportunity to perform, compete, and connect with teen poets from around the country.

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair—/ The bees are stirring—birds are on the wing—/ And Winter slumbering in the open air,/ Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring!

Please join us in a conversation with Leah Umansky on Womanhood and Bravery.
Leah’s newest book, Of Tyrant (Word Works Books, 2024), is about living under the eye of the tyrant. The tyrant, in his many forms, devastates our democracy and our truths. In doing so, he also infringes on what is precious in our humanity and hearts.
