The Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) Mumbai is one of the biggest chapter of AFST(I) with 400+ food scientists and technologists.
Mr. M. M. Chitale, born on September 9th, 1944, was a distinguished professional with a remarkable career spanning 54 years across various disciplines. His educational qualifications included a B.Sc, B.Sc.
(Tech) in 1969, and a Diploma in Marketing Management. Mr. Chitale's illustrious career culminated in his tenure as the Executive Director at the Protein Foods & Nutrition Development Association of India.
Throughout his extensive career, he showcased expertise in R&D Product Development, Quality Control, Production, Projects, Factory, and General Management. Notably, he contributed his skills to esteemed companies such as Hindustan Lever Ltd., Dr. Writers Food Products Pvt. Ltd., and Amrit Foods. His professional journeys took him across Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and the U.K., offering him valuable international exposure. Mr. Chitale remained a dedicated life member of the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) for over 52 years. He played a pivotal role in the association's development, serving as Vice President HQ. His passing creates a void within the community, leaving behind a legacy of significant impact on the food and nutrition industry. Throughout his lifetime, he mentored over 100 start-ups and 400 students. Despite being an expert in the food domain, he ventured into new territory and became a regulatory expert in FSSAl at the age of 65.
Launching his consultancy services at 65, he successfully managed them until the age of 80. His contributions extended to various Board of Studies, greatly influencing the realms of food technology and Food Management. Additionally, he co-guided Ph.D. studies for 2 students and authored over 20 articles, delivered 200 lectures, participated in 300 seminars, and contributed to over 200 food conferences as an organizing member. For AFST India, he served as a backbone in the finance committee for over 30 years and was a core member of the industrial relations committee. Within AFST Mumbai, he was revered as our guiding light, supporting and guiding all office bearers over the past 35 years. His presence and active guidance were integral to the success of every AFST Mumbai function.
The Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) [AFST(I)] Mumbai Chapter is proud to institute the first ever prestigious Shri M. M. Chitale Entrepreneur Award for 2024 tomorrow at ICT Mumbai on the occasion of World Food Day 2024. Chitale Sir was an integral part of AFSTI Mumbai Chapter and a mentor to many food technologists. The award is instituted in his loving memory to individuals who embody his values of innovation, leadership, and commitment to the food industry.

AFST Mumbai Chapter was happy to support Codex program conducted by the Chamber for Advancement of Small and Medium Businesses (CASMB), in collaboration with the National Codex Contact Point and FSSAI, at ITCFSAN, Mumbai, aimed at strengthening Codex activities in India. This extensive outreach initiative sought to enhance understanding of Codex and encourage active participation from stakeholders, including industry professionals, students, and scientific experts, to protect national interests in food safety and trade.
Organized under the guidance and support of Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, and with the steadfast presence of Dr. Alka Rao, Advisor at FSSAI, the event was backed by major associations and industries in the food and technology sectors.
The session saw the participation of over 500 representatives from startups, industry, audit agencies, nutritionists, food lab analysts (both state and private), scientists, PhD scholars, and postgraduate students from leading research institutions in the western region.
This initiative fostered a dialogue among the three pillars of the food fraternity—regulators, industry, and academia—to enlighten and harmonize the concepts of Codex and global regulations. It aimed to enhance the nation's presence in the global arena of food enrichment through technical advancements.
