Ever wonder why your gums are poked and prodded every so often during dental visits, with the dentist or dental assistant shouting numbers out with every poke? It’s not the most comfortable dental check, but it’s important for monitoring your gum health.

It’s Called Perio Charting!

Periodontal charting, or perio charting for short, is the process of measuring the depth of pockets of space between teeth and the surrounding gum line. The deeper the pocket, the greater the potential for gum disease. Normal or healthy gum tissue is usually within the 0-3mm range, whereas anything over a 4 will come with a recommendation for added gum care. Bleeding and gum recession are also indicators of gingivitis and gum disease, so the presence of these will also be noted during the process.

So this should clue you into your gum health when you hear these numbers shouted out. Lots of 4s or higher? Lots of bleeding? You may have some daily hygiene steps to add in or need to schedule more frequent dentist visits for scaling and root planing, commonly referred to as a “perio therapy” or a “deep cleaning”. In areas where gum disease has already set in, you could even hear larger numbers closer to 10, or even 12 if your gums are severely diseased. These levels indicate your gums are likely beyond home care and you’ll need professional intervention.
