In the second floor of the Natural Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno Park in Tokyo is the taxidermy remains of Hachiko (1923-1935), the most famous dog in Japan. A male Akita, Hachi has become the standard of loyalty and devotion, waiting for his master Eisaburo Ueno, a Todai professor of agriculture, by 5pm sharp every day at Shibuya train station for a decade after Mr. Ueno had already died of stroke. Hachiko’s remains were entrusted to Sakamoto Kiichi, the son of the man regarded as the founder of modern taxidermy in Japan.
