🕊️ As Rwanda somberly commemorates the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi, African heads of state are gathering in Kigali today to honor the memory of the lives lost. Among them are Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, underscoring the regional importance of remembrance and reconciliation.
In keeping with tradition, today, April 7th – the day when the carnage erupted in 1994 – will be marked by Rwandan President Paul Kagame lighting a remembrance flame at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It's a poignant moment as we reflect on the over 250,000 victims believed to be buried at this site.
The national commemoration ceremony is slated to commence with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities perpetrated against over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
African Diaspora Nation stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Rwanda as they reflect on this day. Let us join hands in honoring the memory of the fallen and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of justice, healing, and peace. May the flame of remembrance continue to illuminate our path forward.
