It’s Tuesday.
Jesus and I came back into Jerusalem this morning and the chief priests and teachers came out, obviously still hurt and embarrased about the whole, turning over tables saga, and the children yelling out HOSANNA in the temple.
Right away they started questioning Jesus.
“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.
Jesus, like always, answered their question with a question.
He said, “I will ask you a question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John’s baptism- was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!”
Then, the teachers huddled together and I could hear them talking to each other.
“If we say, ‘from heaven’, he will ask, ‘then why didn’t you believe him?’
But if we say, ‘From men’...(they feared the people, because everyone knew that John really was a prophet.)
So......They answered Jesus! “WE DONT KNOW.”
Ha!
They dont know...can you believe that?
I love what Jesus said next, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
I guess the teachers and chief priest were not able to receive what Jesus was doing.
They already knew the answer!
They knew that Jesus was given authority from the Father but they didn’t want to receive it!
The day ends with Jesus pronouncing a curse on the city and announcing that the Kingdom will be taken away from the nation.
On the return to Bethany the Disciples were loaded with questions.
Jesus stops at the Mount of Olives overlooking the temple, and gives the Olivet Discourse.
It’s amazing how everything is changing so rapidly.
Just 2 days ago Jesus came riding in on a donkey while everyone chanted and praised him.
Now It’s as if everyone is turning on him simply because He claims to be the Messiah.
There is even talk of His arrest.
Maybe tomorrow will be better.
It’s Tuesday.....
But Sunday is coming!
It’s Palm Sunday! Jesus came riding in humbly on a a foal of a donkey. And He was acknowledged as King by some and scorned by others.
