The Drake Equation was first formulated to provide an agenda for a small workshop on the prospects for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Drawing expressions from astrophysics, evolutionary biology and history, it makes a probabilistic argument for the existence of intelligent life elsewhere. This course will take up four topics related to the Drake equation: its development in the historic tradition of probabilistic arguments and in the context of post-World War II American science; the history of radio astronomy and its relationship to SETI; the history of ideas about the plurality of worlds and extraterrestrial life; and visions of the end of civilization.

It is a wondrous phenomenon of nature, one that we are just beginning to understand.
