Coaching vs. Counseling: Which is the Right Choice for You? - Vancouver Psychology Centre Coaching vs. Counseling: Which is the Right Choice for You? The truth is - you can choose coaching, counseling or both, as it fits for you!
VPC welcomes John Buttedahl to our team!
John brings Executive Coaching excellence to VPC - a service that we have been keen to offer to our clients for some time.
For those who are new to what Executive Coaching is, here's a quick primer:
Executive Coaching is the process of using efficient, strong-impact dialogue and validated strategy that helps high-performing people solve problems, reach goals and improve results that are sustained over time.
Unlike traditional business consulting or mentoring, Executive Coaching uses a proven, results-based methodology of conversation that enables leaders to focus, generate important insights, gain clarity and make decisions that will improve their personal performance or that of their team.
Our coaching sessions are tailored to address any specific topic(s) you desire. We’re experts at helping clients identify the true cause of challenges they’re facing in the workplace and assist them to successfully navigate towards measurable outcomes that are the most meaningful to them or their organization. Often, custom long-term engagements are developed to tackle directives that are large in scope or involve multiple individuals. However, each session starts with your specific topic, a measurable goal and a valuable outcome for you.
Entrepreneurs, executives, managers and rising talent can all benefit from this process to help them find immediate solutions or tackle long-term goals whether they are personal, interpersonal, for small departments or for entire companies. For more about Mr Buttedahl’s Executive Coaching services, take a look here: https://www.vancouverpsychologycentre.com/clinician/john-buttedahl/
We're currently booking John for those that want to make a powerful & measurable change in the first quarter of 2024. Our team is available at 604-733-7709 to answer your questions and to connect you with John's Executive Coaching services.

🤯 Language on Twitter that's predictive of heart disease mortality 🤯 ...a study from the University of Pennsylvania
This is a to a 2015 study that we still love. It's interesting because it combines social science and popular culture to yield some powerful results.
The short story is: folks that post language that reflects Anger, Negative Relationships, Negative Emotions, Disengagement & Anxiety have an increased likelihood of death due to coronary heart disease, and those that use language that reflects Positive Relationships, Positive Emotions & Engagement have less risk of & death due to coronary heart disease.
Questions to ponder:
~ Do the results surprise you?
~ When you think of your posts (rants?!?) on social media in the last 6-months, what language & tone do you notice?
~ Do you fall into the 'at risk' or the 'at less risk' category
While the study is US-based, so we don't have hard data that links similar trends in other parts of the world AND it looks at use of language on Twitter, as opposed to Instagram, TikTok or other social media platforms ... one can reasonable generate some hypotheses that the results have similarities in other geographic locations & on other social media platforms.
And yes - the science is very compelling. Valid. Huge #'s in the sample, etc, etc.
And obviously vocabulary is only a sampling of the mood, approach, vibe or sentiments of the persons using the aforementioned words, the study shows a big relationship between point-of-view and physical health (well, it's life or death really, isn't it?!)... worth a ponder for sure!
In any event, for those looking for a quick review of the original study, take a look here:

We have a ton of strategies that we give our clients along with the support to implement the strategies - but if you aren't a client of ours and are out of the BC area (so you can't access our services), here's a terrific looking course worth looking at from Harvard Health Publishing. They have a lot of the bases covered and some great info to help you to feel like you have your intelligence and your clear thinking back. Check it out!

Thanks to CTVNews - Canada, USA and World News for inviting us to help put parents' minds at ease. Kids don't have to be in back-to-back summer programs & entertained 24/7 this summer. Boredom is a feeling state that is normal - just like all emotions. Helping our kids to equate that feeling of boredom with a cue to get creative, to be silly or to use their imagination will help their brains to grow and will help them to develop a sense of self efficacy.
Boredom isn't a bad thing. Our job as parents is not to snap to it and get our kids 'unbored' as soon as the "I'm BORED" is proclaimed! It's our job to help them to figure out how to get 'unbored' themselves.
Quick rules of thumb:
- unstructured, unentertained, unprogrammed time is good every single day
- if your child isn't used to kid-generated self-entertainment, start small with 5 or 10-minute chunks of time at first to increase the chance of success
- pre-plan the cool "Kid-Generated Stuff to Do this summer" lists collaboratively with your child so that when the "I'm BORED" strikes, you can direct your child to choose a fun activity that they can do on their own
- give tons of verbal praise to your child for choosing something to do that they like and for actioning what they choose to do
Happy summer-ing!
