Saving Newborn Lives Uganda
Saving Newborn Lives Programme, Save the Children Uganda
The number of babies infected with HIV in Uganda has reduced from 28,000 in 2011 to 3,500 in 2015. This represents an 86% reduction in Maternal to Child transmission of HIV. We can bring this number down by testing for HIV in the early stages of pregnancy.
Mother-to-child transmission of HIV happens during pregnancy, childbirth (also called labor and delivery), or breastfeeding (through breast milk).

According to the World Health Organization, Uganda ranks13th out of 184 countries with number of babies born prematurely. We can bring these numbers down by taking expectant mothers for Antenatal
To prevent death of babies born preterm, we do not need to depend on costly high technology care. There are proven low-cost, effective and reliable care options for preterm and small babies, such as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) which is suitable for communities that are resource-constrained. If scaled up to universal coverage, Kangaroo Mother Care, could save 450,000 premature lives.
We are Committed to
At the helm of safe motherhood is a midwife. We applaud all those midwives who go beyond their professional role to make sure that mothers and newborns make it through child birth.
On this , we celebrate the midwives... and expectant mothers across the land.

Too many families grieve in silence, sometimes never coming to terms with their loss
For that person who has suffered a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, a still birth or the loss of an infant... we grieve with you.

Infants who are not Breastfed are 15 times more likely to die from Pneumonia and 11 times more likely to die of diarrhoea than those who are exclusively Breastfed for the first 6 months of life (UNICEF, 2012)
During this , we are calling upon all mothers to Breastfeed their babies in order to curb down the under 5 death rate . Happy breastfeeding week
In Uganda, we are currently at 438 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and about 23 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births. We have a lot of work to do to Save Newborn Lives
Midwives cannot meet these targets on their own. There is need for concerted efforts from all spheres – Government, civil society, professional councils, midwives themselves, and development partners – to achieve better outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Midwives need support from all quarters to achieve better outcomes - Healthy Newborn Network Blog by Sylvia Nabanoba, Save the Children. I was once asked which verse of Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepherd, made the most meaning to my life. Verse 4, I quickly replied: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. … Continued

SAVE THE CHILDREN UGANDA Saving new lives interventions in lira referal regional hospital
More women survive pregnancy and childbirth and more children survive their early years than ever before. Yet unacceptably high levels of mortality impede the realization of healthy and sustainable societies. Each day, across the globe, 800 women and 7,400 newborns still die from complications related to pregnancy, childbirth, and other causes, and an additional 7,300 women experience a stillbirth. These deaths are largely preventable and occur predominantly among the poorest and most marginalized groups. In this week of Women Deliver, we are proudly associated with causes to Save new Born lives
The best partnership for a pregnant woman is with a qualified midwife. Today, on the International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate all midwives across the globe who do whatever it takes to deliver healthy babies. You are our Heroes
Babies at Hoima Referral Hospital are put in basins due to shortage of space but it is also an innovative way to keep the babies safe.
One of the objectives for setting up the Regional Newborn Learning Network is to offer opportunity to test innovative approaches to improve service delivery for Mothers and babies.

Fathers too need to get actively involved in taking care of their newborn babies.
Part of the Save The Children Uganda team at Hoima Referral Hospital with Members of Parliament, where Save the Children will be setting up a Regional Newborn Learning Network where we expect to raise quality of care at birth, extra care for sick and small babies, and better care for every mother and every baby.
We lose over 19 mothers a day in Uganda! That is an increase from 16 mothers a day. In most cases, when mothers die, their babies die too!

Do you know what maternal death is? Maternal death is defined as "The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes."
Shocking but true & unacceptable: In Uganda, 438 mothers are still dying out of every 100,000 live births. This translates to about 18 mothers dying everyday, what activists have equated to a whole taxi of mothers crashing everyday.
