An album that has recently seen it's 50th anniversary this year, Vince Guaraldi captured a perfect tone for the 1965 tv special A Charlie Brown Christmas. It was uncommon at that time for jazz to be featured in a cartoon, but after hearing Guaraldi, Lee Mendelson had contacted him a few years before to score a documentary (which was never released and became "Jazz Impressions of A Boy Named Charlie Brown").

The recording took place in Glendale, CA and featured Jerry Granelli and Colin Bailey on drums, Fred Marshall and Monty Budwig on double bass, and the Children's Chorus of St. Paul's Episcopal Church out of San Rafael, CA. Guaraldi believed the kids should sound like kids and therefore chose rather out of tune takes for a few of the songs, such as "Hark, The Herald Angel Sing". The kids got five dollars and ice cream, which is a great compensation for an album that has gone triple platinum.

This particular album has been lost for many years. Really just forgotten and that's why we'd like to bring it back this Christmas Eve. Bobby Timmons was known as the composer of "Moanin'", however he is a very accomplished musician that has played with Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley to name a few. He died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1974 after being flown home because he was too ill to perform with Clark Terry in Europe. This particular album was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio in New Jersey on November 24th, 1964. This album has been a holy grail album for us, without any full recordings or reissues anywhere (including the internet). We found this and immediately catalogued and digitized it. Hopefully this will see a reissue soon or at least hopefully our video (which is the only full copy I can find on the internet) may prompt someone to reissue it.

Can't go without some Frank Sinatra for Christmas. "A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra" was Sinatra's first full length Christmas album and was released in 1957. Another reissue in 2007 also contained a bonus track which was an old radio PSA that Sinatra did for the American Lung Association at Christmas. Kurtis Blow's first single in 1979, Christmas Rappin' is about 8 minutes of Christmas raps, it's all in the title. Kurtis founded the Hip Hop Church and serves as a DJ, worship leader, rapper, and an ordained minister as of 2009. And last year along with this year is a guest MC for the "Hip Hop Nutcracker". The Beach Boys' Christmas Album was released in 1964 as a response to Phil Specter's "A Christmas Gift For You, From Philles Records" from a year before (which is said to be Brian Wilson's favorite album). Brian Wilson played piano during the recording of The Crystals take on "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", however Phil Specter didn't think Brian was very good at piano so they replaced him. The Beach Boys' album contains that Coca Cola polar bear favorite "Little Saint Nick" along with a great a ca****la "Auld Lang Syne" at the end.

James Brown graced the earth with A Soulful Christmas on King in 1968. It contains some very warm holiday tunes such as "Let's Unite the World At Christmas" and the not so cheery instrumental, "Believers Shall Enjoy (Non Believers Shall Suffer)". Either way, the Godfather of Soul provides a tapestry for a good, funky Christmas.

The choice of poems and their sequencing offers what Sun Ra thought was most important in his writing. Here are key words like “cosmos,” “truth,” “bad,” “myth,” and “the impossible,”; attention to phonetic equivalence; the universality of the music and its metaphysical status; allusions to black fraternal orders and secret societies; biblical passages and their interpretation; and even a few autobiographical glimpses.
