We have a brand new tree today ,in the front yard of my mom’s house, in Center Point, Alabama! It’s supposedly a “Profusion Crabapple,” and is expected to someday bloom pink! Ripples in the New Delta

In the wake of a radically altered world, Alabama's landscape has been irrevocably reshaped by the surging tides of climate change. The once-mighty Alabama River, now a sprawling delta, straddles a fragmented society where the remnants of a bygone era linger in the memories of the old and the aspirations of the young.

In a small settlement perched on stilts above the water called Jones Bluff Island, life thrives in stark simplicity. Families gather around fires, cooking fish caught from the teeming waters below, their flickering flames casting shadows that dance across weathered faces. Elders recount tales of a time when lights blazed at the flick of a switch, water flowed at a turn of a tap, and voices carried across vast distances at the mere touch of a button. Their words weave a tapestry of a lost world, stirring a sense of longing in the listeners.

Yet, not all yearn for the return of the past. Some have embraced a new law, where strength and adaptability reign supreme. They navigate the waterways with a predator's grace, bartering and battling fiercely for resources, their boats laden with scavenged relics of the old world. In their eyes, the collapse has set them free, unshackling them from the constraints of a society that no longer exists.

In this new Alabama, two ideologies converge like the river's currents. One clings to the hope of rebuilding the world that was, the other adapts to the world that is. As the sun sets over the sprawling delta, casting a golden glow on the water, the people of this new world prepare for another night, united by their resilience and divided by their dreams.
