My grandmother taught me. She found time to make every moment a teachable one. In the world of "Positive Parenting" that's referred to as "incidental teaching" All mothers must take the responsibility of our own decision making. We each have our unique circumstances and issues regarding our own health and that of our families. We must have well educated mothers in the art of mothering. Our elders were very confident in what it meant to be a mother and healer of the family. Information was passed down through the wombman circles or just while in the kitchen preparing a meal, about what each food was for and how to use them in recipes to take care of the family.
We've lost so much in terms of how as a community we supported each other with the information we shared. We do not trust the elders or that a midwife or a doula is about more than teaching how to use traditional medicine during pregnancy or in preparation for giving birth to get the baby out. Once the baby is born there is so much more to be offered. For a midwife it is only the beginning not the end for helping a new mom with her children.
Knowledge is the key to being confident about the decisions we are faced to make for our families years after the baby is born. In my opinion, it is also the duty of the Midwife, "Birth Workers" or Activists to begin to teach about all aspects of family life, reproductive health and the spacing of children as our ancestral grandmothers did who dedicated themselves to this service of care.
A mother who studies learns about the pros, the cons, the benefits, the risks, the consequences and the rewards that go into what we allow or don't allow. This grants us peace of mind. Mothers have to relearn the difference between religion and spirituality so that "mother Witt" is respected. Study will strengthen trust in what the intuitive mind tells them and to trust in that no matter what. Because at the end of the day... decisions that are made must be weighed, believed in, stood by, defended without regret, without shame and without guilt.
Modern medicine has put blinders on so that we think today the methods "practiced" hold all the answers to life or death. In some ways we have advanced ourselves into a world of chemical dependency associated with many side effects at the expense of weakened immune systems. Modern western medicine has its place in many cases. We just have to acknowledge that what was considered safe and put on the market in the past, may not be so in the present. Always ask for current and up to date information on any product that is prescribed by your doctor, especially ask about the side effects to determine is it really worth it. Whether you decide to use it or not, never become combative with your health care provider. It throws up red flags of concern for the provider which may lead to an investigation for "child neglect"
