From the beginning of HVARS a large part of our mission was spaying and neutering, making vet care affordable and keeping animals in their homes, happy & healthy. We have assisted in TNR (Trap Neuter Release) population control and over the years, with a lot of help from trappers, we have fixed thousands of cats and controlled countless colonies.
What you may not know- These trappers are volunteering their time, money and every bit of their own resources to help these stray, feral, and neglected cats.
We have always helped in any way possible, but we have decided to work on making a bigger impact by helping the trappers that help the community.
Over the last few months, we have worked hard starting a fund to help cover the cost of TNR for the trappers. We are now offering "Feral Fridays" where anyone from the community can come and use our veterinary services and have unowned, feral, colony cats, fixed for no cost to the trapper.
Yup! you heard that right, but read below to see if you qualify.
This program is meant to help people who are feeding and trapping at a location that has 5 or more cats. The cats must be feral and come to our clinic in a trap. They will receive a Rabies vaccine & ear notch. Friendly house cats and cats not in traps will be turned away. If you have friendly cats at a colony, HVARS will be willing to evaluate them for intake. THIS IS NOT A HOUSE CAT PROGRAM.
Because the program is so new, our funds are very limited so the certificates given for the service will be limited but we are hoping that we can continue to fundraise for the cause and make it so that we don't ever have to say no.
The cost to fix a feral cat is $60, if you are not a trapper or even someone in the TNR world but would like to donate to a great cause, please do so on our website at HVARS.org and please be sure to put in the comments that this is to be used for the Community Cat Initiative. Every $60 means one less cat reproducing in this county.
If you are someone or know someone who this program would truly help, please reach out via email with more information and we will be in touch [email protected]
If you need help but are unable to trap yourself, please reach out.
We are hopeful that our community can come together to keep this program going and every week we can TNR 30+ cats.
Please share & consider donating to this fund.

Urgent help needed!!! I just met two women in the city of Poughkeepsie tonight who are wrongfully being put out on the street with no where to go this Sunday. They have looked and called everywhere they could think of in the area. Housing is hard to find and ridiculously high. If anyone knows of an apartment for rent no more than $1500, please message me so I can connect you to them. Please share!
This information is very important to know
when you see a dirty cat, WHY the cat looks "dirty", and easy ways to help.
🔺Cats can resist hunger for up to a week on average, but not more than 2-3 days in case of thirst.
🔺🚨 Cats are habitually very clean, they groom themselves several times a day, if you see a cat that is not clean, it means that it is DEHYDRATED and has been for many days.🚨
🔺 His salivary glands do not work well because they require moisture.
🔺Please, if you see a seemingly dirty stray kitten, DO NOT run or look at it in disgust, it has already had rough days where it probably hasn't eaten or drank anything for a long time.
Even If you don't like cats, give them kindness out of compassion, and give them some clean water.
🔺️Cats process water better via wet food. If you find a hungry / thirsty cat, providing wet cat food can help the cat / kitten rehydrate more effectively.
🔺 For humanity, empathy and love for others, bring them food and above all else a container with WATER. It's not easy being thirsty and hungry and not being able to say a word! 💔🥺

🐰Cottontails are being found Everywhere ! Here, pictures are examples to protect the bunny nest for 14days before they move along. Letting mama IN to feed while keeping predators OUT. You may never see mama she’s like a stealthy ninja 🥷 Only feeding twice a day, not being seen. And if you are still worried if she’s coming by - apply this technique - place flour or sticks around the baby nest and if disturbed you know she’s come by!

MARCH 17: THE PATRON OF CATS
Saint Gertrude of Nivelles
Abbess
Died: 659
---
She was a Austrasian Benedictine abbess. She was known for her hospitality to pilgrims and the aid given to Irish missionary monks. She obtained, for the monastery, books and relics of saints. She was a noted mystic and visionary. She was first venerated as the patron against rats and mice during the plague that ravaged during Middle Ages. This perhaps is the reason why she also became (more popularly) the patron of cats.
