𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 (𝟒𝟎𝟔 𝐀.𝐃.):

Rivers were often seen in antiquity as providing a relatively strong frontier and barrier against opposing forces from entering your territory. However, with regards to rivers, they are susceptible to freezing. This is where an issue of freezing, allegedly, occurred in 406 A.D. and its been seen as a hugely detrimental event in the history of the Western Roman Empire. This was not a new occurrence, although, some have argued that the river did not actually freeze, rather that is represented the idea of mass immigration into the Western Roman Empire, unchecked and without resistance, all the characteristics of the empire in the 5th-century A.D. An idea that the so-called civilised Western Roman Empire tried its best but was ultimately doomed to failure as it tried to prevent the ‘barbarian’ peoples from marching onto land belonging to the empire.

As we have seen in an earlier post, when it came to Alaric and his men, who had sought shelter in the empire and offered to fight in the name of the Roman empire but was turned down by Honorius, this idea of migration was not always with the intent to cause the Romans harm, but they felt, more and more, pressure being placed on them from the Huns. The Huns had menacingly burst onto the Roman scene and around 376 A.D., this caused vast numbers of people seeking shelter, arriving in large numbers at the well-guarded Danube frontier, men, women, and children, some Iranic Alans but mostly Germanic Gepids and much more numerous Tervingi and Greuthungi Goths, all of them begging to be admitted within the safety of imperial territory.

All of those men were hardened and experienced warriors but they had been panicked into flight who had advanced upon them from the steppe further east.

PRAETORIAN CIVIL STRIFE

The Praetorian Guard, initially established as an elite unit to protect the Roman emperors, became a source of significant civil strife in the Roman Empire, particularly during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Their influence extended beyond mere guardianship, as they frequently intervened in imperial succession and politics, often with violent consequences.

The Praetorian Guard’s power grew to such an extent that they could make or break emperors. This was evident in 41 AD when they played a crucial role in the assassination of Emperor Caligula and subsequently elevated Claudius to the throne. The Guard's involvement in politics often led to instability, as they prioritized their interests over the welfare of the empire.

The height of their interference came during the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD), a chaotic period marked by rapid changes in leadership following the death of Nero. The Praetorians supported and then betrayed several claimants to the throne, contributing to the civil unrest and bloodshed that characterized this year. Their loyalty was often swayed by bribes and promises of power, rather than any sense of duty or allegiance to a legitimate ruler.

In the 3rd century, the situation worsened during the Crisis of the Third Century (235-284 AD). The Praetorian Guard was instrumental in the rapid succession of emperors, many of whom were placed in power only to be quickly deposed or assassinated. This period of instability weakened the empire, making it more vulnerable to external threats and internal dissent.

The culmination of Praetorian excess came with the murder of Emperor Pertinax in 193 AD and the subsequent auctioning of the imperial throne to the highest bidder, Didius Julianus. This blatant display of corruption underscored the extent to which the Praetorian Guard had become a destabilizing force within the empire.

Recognizing the detrimental impact of the Praetorian Guard, Emperor Constantine the Great eventually disbanded them in the early 4th century, following his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. Constantine replaced them with a more loyal and less politically ambitious bodyguard, thereby restoring some stability to the imperial administration.

The civil strife instigated by the Praetorian Guard highlights the complexities and vulnerabilities of Roman political structures, where military power often overshadowed civil authority, leading to periods of intense instability and violence within the empire..

The Cavalry Draw
The history of the cavalry draw can be traced back to the era of the American Civil War. The United States Army and the Confederate States Army utilized a technique known as the cavalry draw, named after the gun leather used by cavalry soldiers.

The cavalry was performed in three steps:
1. Rotate the wrist, placing the top of the hand toward the shooter's body.
2. Slip the hand between the body and the butt of the pistol, grasping the pistol's stock in a standard shooting grip.
3. Draw the pistol, rotating the wrist to normal orientation as the arm is brought up to the shooting position.

With practice, the cavalry draw can be as fast or even faster than drawing from a standard butt-rearward holster because of the assistance of the body in the placement of the hand on the pistol stocks.

During the Civil War, cavalrymen carried their pistols in covered holsters, typically positioned on the right side of their bodies. The holsters were designed to allow cross-drawing, enabling the cavalryman to draw the pistol with their left hand. This placement on the right side also allowed an alternative method of drawing the pistol with the right hand if the sword was lost in battle.

Initially, the pistol was considered a secondary weapon, with the cavalryman primarily relying on their saber, which was wielded with the right hand. However, the alternative method of drawing the pistol became the norm in practice. The cavalrymen would keep their swords sheathed until they had used up their pistol's ammunition and spare loaded cylinders.
