Learning Greek is not only language, it's also culture. Kids in greek schools study the play "Antigone" by Sophocles. But what's this play about?

> Follow our new page The Greek Scholar for more material!

"Antigone" by Sophocles inspires us to consider the conflict between "law" and "individual conscience": Should Antigone bury her dead brother following her moral compass or let him be unburied and eaten by the dogs as Creon, the law of the state, demands?

🌊The term "Διακοπές" is used in plural because it literally means "Pauses".

Due to recent events, "Γυναικοκτονία" is a topic of intense debate within greek social media circles.
While "Ανθρωποκτονία" is a generic term for any murder, "Γυναικοκτονία" underlines that a murder of a woman is directly linked to her gender.

Both words share the same structure and meaning with their english translations:
Ανθρωπο-κτονία (Homi-cide) Γυναικο-κτονία (Femi-cide)

χωριάτικη σαλάτα [choriatiki saláta] literally means "the peasant's salad" 🌾

History of the name.

🇬🇷Στο παρελθόν, όσοι δούλευαν στα χωριά, έπαιρναν μαζί τους για φαγητό μια ντομάτα,🍅 ένα κρεμμύδι🧅, κανένα αγγουράκι🥒 και σπάνια λίγο τυρί🧀 μαζί με ένα καρβέλι ψωμί🥖. Tα έβαζαν σε ένα πανί, που ήταν δεμένο στις άκρες του και γινόταν έτσι το "lunchbox" της εποχής.

🗣️Sto parelthón, ósi dúlevan sta choriá, épernan mazí ya fayitó mía domata,🍅 éna kremídi,🧅 kanéna aguráki🥒 ke spánia ligo tirí 🧀mazí me éna karvéli psomí🥖. Τa évazan se éna paní, pu ítan deméno stis ákres tu ke ginótan to "lunchbox" tis epochís.

🇬🇧In the past, those who worked in the countryside, normally brought with them a tomato, an onion, maybe a cucumber and rarely some cheese, together with a loaf of bread. They put everything in a big cloth which they tied by its tips and it became their "lunchbox".
