Recital tonight in Auckland, New Zealand! Looking forward to it, in spite of monstrous Jet lag. My lovely practice room, where I tried to get back in shape under the watchful eyes of no less than Beethoven, Rembrandt, van Gogh, and Tchaikovsky among others. Radio interview with New Zealand, and of course, a life-saving fabulous espresso. They know their coffee, in this country! Wish me luck for tonight’s recital!!!
Released Today!!! The following web page is updated with Spotify and other links, if you’d like to listen!

Marc-André Hamelin gave a fantastic masterclass yesterday at CIM, in beautiful Mixon Hall. We are grateful that Mr. Hamelin accepted our invitation, and feel privileged to have been able to offer this great opportunity to our students, both those performing, and those in attendance. Mr. Hamelin, as we all know, is an amazing pianist and composer, but also a wonderful teacher. Now, we are greatly looking forward to his recital this afternoon at Reinberger Hall!
BREAKING NEWS:
So excited about this amazing addition to the CIM Piano faculty! Greatly looking forward to working with the amazing Gabriela Montero at CIM! Here is the official announcement:
CLEVELAND, Nov. 16, 2023 – The brilliant constellation that is CIM’s piano faculty has gained a new star.
On Thursday, Executive Vice President and Provost Scott Harrison announced the appointment of Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero as a member of the piano faculty and the Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan D. Epstein Artist-in-Residence.
The pianist and composer, an eminent figure noted for her probing performances, uncommon ability to improvise, and human rights advocacy, will commence teaching at CIM in fall 2024, and is now accepting applications for her studio.
CIM has extended the application deadline for piano students interested in studying with Ms. Montero to January 8.
“It is a true honor to welcome Gabriela Montero to the CIM piano faculty,” said Antonio Pompa-Baldi, head of CIM’s Piano Department. “She is a generational talent, a uniquely gifted individual who happens to be not only a great artist, pianist, improviser, and composer but also a phenomenal human being.
“Having her as a member of the CIM family fulfills our aspirations to constantly raise the level of our already amazing faculty.”
Montero is no stranger to CIM. In July, she visited the school as a guest instructor at the Cleveland International Piano Institute, a co-presentation with Piano Cleveland in association with the 2023 Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. CIM piano faculty Kathryn Brown and Piano Cleveland president Yaron Kohlberg served as co-directors of the Institute.
Reflecting on her experience after that visit, which included a recital at nearby Severance Music Center and a masterclass at CIM, Montero described CIM as “an inspiring place” where the environment is “all about collaboration.”
“What has really touched me is the quality of the people and the philosophy of teaching and learning,” she said.
A native of Caracas and a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Montero is acclaimed both for her captivating performances of traditional repertoire and her remarkable ability to improvise, often on complex themes. (Improvisation was the subject of her July masterclass at CIM.)
She has collaborated with major orchestras all over the world, including The Cleveland Orchestra, and is an active, award-winning recording artist and composer. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal advocate for human rights, utilizing her platform to raise awareness for social and political issues in her native Venezuela.
At CIM, Montero will be the Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan D. Epstein Artist-in-Residence and a member of the piano faculty. In addition to teaching privately, she will conduct masterclasses and perform annually. For information on how to join her studio or apply to CIM, visit cim.edu/apply.
“CIM has a century-long history of appointing legendary pianists to its faculty, and Gabriela Montero extends that tradition,” said Paul W. Hogle, CIM’s President & CEO.
“Gabriela is one of the world’s leading musical lights and will be a profoundly positive influence on our students and musical life at CIM. We are honored and excited to welcome her to our faculty.”

This Saturday! Marc-André Hamelin at CIM!
“Suite Nothings”, our latest four-hand album, will be released by the Steinway label on December 1st. It will be available on all the streaming platforms, and it features three Suites: Petite Suite by Claude Debussy, Suite Op.13 “Ricordi d’infanzia” by Luca Moscardi, and Souvenirs Op.28 by Samuel Barber.
For all our non-English speaking friends: the title may seem odd, when it appears on your FB feed automatically translated. It is a play on words. “Sweet Nothings” could be translated into French as “Petits Mots Doux”, in Italian as “Dolci parole amorose”, and in Spanish as “Dulces palabras de amor”. We spelled Sweet as Suite, since all the works featured on the album are Suites.
Emanuela and I loved working on this great music, and we look forward to the release. Thanks to Steinway & Sons for the trust. Thanks also to Luca Moscardi for entrusting us with the premiere performance, and now the premiere recording of his beautiful Suite!

Gramophone magazine just published a review of the Danacord CD featuring highlights of the 2022 Husum Piano Rarities festival.
This being one of the most renowned publications in the world of classical music, it is both exciting and gratifying to be reviewed by one of its critics.
Authored by Jeremy Nicholas, this particular review is part of the October issue. The Husum Festival is an amazing event, featuring a treasure trove of lesser-known, or unknown gems from the piano repertoire, performed by wonderful artists. This small town in northern Germany, near the border with Denmark, has become one of the most significant Piano hubs, thanks to the vision of its founder and artistic director, Peter Froundjian, and also to these Danacord Records CDs, issued after every edition of the festival. It is a great honor for me, to be featured alongside formidable colleagues, and thank you, Jeremy Nicholas, for praising my little contribution so highly!
Quoting the part of the review that truly made my day:
“The undoubted ‘primus inter pares’ [first among equals] star of the collection is the Italian-American virtuoso Antonio Pompa-Baldi. I would buy this release just to hear him in the Andante appassionato by the Chilean composer Enrique Soro Barriga (1884-1954), the hair-raising first Studio da concerto, Op.31, by Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli (1882-1949), and the pianist’s own improvisation on Charlie Chaplin’s tune ‘Smile’.”

Music and Piano lovers in Cleveland: Wednesday, September 13, Gabriela Montero is giving a masterclass at CIM. It takes place at 4PM in beautiful Mixon Hall. Later in the day, at 7PM and also in Mixon Hall, please come listen to Gabriela talk about Music, Creativity, and the Role of the Artist in Society. It will be a wonderful afternoon and evening, and you are all invited!
Due to several flight cancellations en route to Cleveland, Jean-Marc Luisada will not be able to arrive in time for his scheduled performance on Sunday, September 10th at 2pm in the Cleveland Museum of Art's Gartner Auditorium. Mr. Luisida regrets these unforeseen travel delays, however he has graciously agreed to reschedule his performance to Monday, September 11th at 7:30pm in Tri-C's Metro Campus Auditorium.
Parking for the Metro Campus Auditorium is located at 2809 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland, OH, (Parking Lot 5--see Tri-C Metro Auditorium Parking Information). Parking is free, and all ticket orders for September 10th will be honored for the performance on September 11th. For program information, visit www.tri-c.edu/pianoseries or call (216)987-6145.
UPDATE: Recital postponed to Monday evening at 7:30PM.
The wonderful pianist Jean-Marc Luisada was scheduled to give a masterclass at CIM, yesterday. Unfortunate circumstances led to the cancellation of that event. He was stranded at JFK as the airport was surrounded by powerful storms.
He spent the night at a hotel about 45 minutes away from JFK (closer hotels were all sold out), and returned to the airport this morning. In what looked more and more like a scene from Groundhog Day, he went through the same exact sequence of events. He waited hours at the gate through a series of delays, boarded the plane, was stuck on it almost 3 hours, returned to the gate, deplaned, and the flight was cancelled again.
Mr. Luisada is headed to Philadelphia now, by car. From there he will fly to Cleveland, mother nature permitting, tomorrow afternoon.
His recital has been postponed to Monday evening at 7:30PM.
Since the Museum of Art is closed on Mondays, the location of the recital is now the Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium
https://www.tri-c.edu/rental/metropolitan-campus-auditorium.html
located at 2900 Community College Ave, Cleveland, OH 44115.
Free parking at Lot 5, accessed from Woodland Ave. https://www.tri-c.edu/arts-and-entertainment/tri-c-presents/index.html
The flier below now has the wrong date, time and location. However, it still has the correct QR code, if you want to scan it and obtain your free ticket.
Those of you who already have a ticket can still use it, if you can make it to the new venue on Monday evening. It will be absolutely worth it.
Hi everyone. I just published a video on my YouTube channel, featuring a gorgeous piece I performed last year at the Husum Rarities of Piano Music festival, in Germany. It's an Etude by Luca Moscardi, a composer I truly admire. There is no video footage of me playing the piece, just a great audio recording. I created the video by using beautiful stock images of winter landscapes. Not that I'm longing for winter, but that's what the Etude evokes, at least to my imagination. I think it is an absolutely gorgeous piece. I asked and obtained permission to publish this from both the Husum festival artistic director Peter Froundjian, and from Danacord's president Jesper Buhl, to whom go my heartfelt thanks for allowing me to share this. Here it is, and I hope you enjoy it!

I just purchased both a physical copy and a digital download of the Danacord CD, featuring the highlights from the 2022 Husum Piano Rarities Festival. I also found a nice review (link below). I just finished listening to the whole CD in its digital form (I bought the lossless .FLAC files, for excellent audio quality). Obviously, I’m proud and pleased to be featured on this CD, but truly that’s not why I’ll tell anyone to get a copy. I must say that, once again, these Husum highlights are a wonderful anthology of extremely beautiful, rarely- or never-before performed Music, played by fantastic pianists (yours truly excepted, naturally), who passionately advocate for, and embrace the mission of unearthing gems from the bottomless ocean of the piano repertoire that we are so lucky to have!

Wow! I just found out that three days ago Danacord released the highly-anticipated 2022 Husum Piano Rarities Festival anthology, the highlights of the Husum festival as selected by its founder and Artistic Director, Peter Froundjian.
Very honored to be featured, and with three selections completely different one from the other: “Andante Appassionato” by Enrique Soro; “Studio da Concerto Op.31 N.1” by Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli; and finally a piece I wrote, based on a very famous melody, called “Smile-Improvisation on a Chaplin tune”. Thank you, Peter, for selecting these pieces from my program for inclusion on the Danacord CD—veritable collector items, and thank you Jesper Buhl, president of Danacord, as well!
From my hotel terrace in Split, I took some pictures of the gorgeous view. I then took a walk through the Diocletian Palace (thank you Vanesa Kleva for being my guide). The palace/fortress was built for the Roman Emperor in the fourth century AD, and it takes up roughly half of the old town of Split. Diocletian was actually born here. Fascinating to walk around there!
It was very hot outdoors, and cats were… catnapping 😊
At Piano Loop Festival, the evening recital by Natalia Trull was absolutely masterful. It was followed by a wonderful dinner, where we also celebrated her birthday. I leave Split with wonderful memories, and looking forward to visiting it again.
Amazing experience to perform here in Split for Piano Loop festival. Great audience in a wonderful hall, located in a gorgeous city. Thanks to Vanesa Kleva and the whole team here for such a great time, before, during and (fabulous dinner) afterwards!

Pic 5: Terrace of Artiçok Restaurant. I enjoyed delicious food, in great company, and all the while “Only Angels Have Wings” (1939 classic with Rita Hayward, Cary Grant, and James Stewart) was being projected on the wall.

After wrapping up Todi International Music Masters and a pleasant trip to Split, Croatia, I will play a recital here, tomorrow! Split is a lively and beautiful place, and so is the Concert Hall! I look forward to performing tomorrow evening!
Yesterday, we welcomed to Todi Prof. Pierre Réach, and held another beautiful recital, with our participants performing admirably. As usual, I collect photos from various sources, of Todi and it’s gorgeous landscapes, and share them here, as well. Tonight is the last full solo recital. From tomorrow, although we will still have some solo, mostly the spotlight shifts to Concertos. TIMM pianists will play with the TIMM Ensemble, and conductor Maestro Francesco D'Ovidio. Looking forward to it!

I had another wonderful, memorable experience to add to this summer’s collection, this time at the International Keyboard Odyssiad & Festival. Thank you, Janet Landreth, for inviting me. This was a rescheduled concert from the canceled edition of 2020. For me, it was definitely worth the wait. Thanks, Bryan Wallick, for your help and assistance. As always, your collegiality and generosity were heartwarming. Thanks to the IKOF staff, to all the amazing colleagues who attended the recital, as well as the students and audience at large. Griffin Hall is a great place to hold a recital. I’d also like to thank Ted Mulcahey, the piano technician who made awesome improvements to the Steinway (the AC was misbehaving, and the hall went from freezing to very hot, several times in the previous two days, making the instrument difficult to control). Finally, many thanks to Shuang Iris Zhang. In addition to being an excellent musician and business woman, she is also an accomplished photographer! Thank you ALL!
Thank you, The Music Gallery, Steinway & Sons of Tampa Bay!!! ❤️

Dear Facebook friends:
This year marks my 20th as a faculty member, here at the Cleveland Institute of Music. It has been quite a journey, with lots of life and professional developments, and many good memories. I am happy to renew my commitment to CIM, now also serving as Head of the Piano Department. I will do my utmost to fulfill this role in a manner befitting this great institution. Many thanks to the CIM leadership for the trust, and to my colleagues for their support.

Some pictures of the amazing Prince Mahidol Hall, where I’ll be performing Beethoven’s Emperor this Saturday with the Thailand National Philharmonic and M° Alfonso Scarano. The “Italia” banners are for a concert the orchestra plays tomorrow, on Italy’s national holiday.
As I reflect on the Lang Lang International Music Festival, the last day stands out for many reasons: the wonderful Shenzhen Symphony accompanying the finalists; the moving closing ceremony; the after party where we finally met and talked to many of the contestants and congratulated them; the Lang Lang masterclass (always greatly entertaining, and also musically spot on); a ride on the Lang Lang Music Bus, which the Shenzhen government made for him, as he took on the role of ambassador for the city, and more. It was lovely to see my former CIM student Guan Yarong and her mom, and also to see two former CIM students (Violinist Ziwei Song and Cellist Tu Gu) performing in the Shenzhen Symphony! What a wonderful experience it has been, to be part of this marvelous festival!
I received another truly incredible honor, to my pleasant surprise: I have been asked to serve as Artistic Advisor for the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. I’m beyond excited to serve in this role alongside two legendary figures of the piano world such as Gary Graffman and Veda Kaplinsky. Based in New York, the Lang Lang International Music Foundation reaches young musicians worldwide, and positively impacts their lives by bringing invaluable educational opportunities to them. I’m very moved to have been asked by Lang Lang and by Lukas Barwinski-Brown—the Foundation’s CEO, to serve in this capacity, and I’ll do my best to be of service in the Foundation’s noble pursuits! Here is the LLIMF website: https://langlangfoundation.org/foundation/
I am always amazed at how Lang Lang uses his vast platform to spread the gift of music among the younger generations. His passion for giving children something this precious, and for being a global ambassador for Music, is awe inspiring. In addition, his versatility is quite incredible. He can pivot from performing Bach’s Goldberg Variations, to sitting through a children’s recital, to playing for King Charles Coronation (something he casually mentioned he’s going to do this Saturday), always with grace, poise, and infectious enthusiasm. This afternoon, I attended the opening ceremony of Lang Lang Art World’s new building in Hangzhou, and my appointment as Vice Educational Director was publicly announced. I look forward to continuing this friendship and collaboration.
