Did you know that the HTWS window can start right from the floor, without any additional wall structure or even trim? 💙 The terrace floor can be completely level with the indoor floor. This creates the impression of the interior extending onto the terrace, allowing you to feel like you are part of nature – in every season. 🌿

Why is a wooden building a responsible choice?

💙 A wooden building is a responsible choice, especially due to its small carbon footprint. Wood acts as a carbon sink, sequestering carbon dioxide throughout its entire lifecycle. Additionally, wooden construction consumes less energy and produces fewer emissions compared to, for example, concrete construction.

💙 Log houses are known for their long lifespan, making them an especially responsible choice. A well-built log house can last for several generations, and even at the end of its lifecycle, it is recyclable, and its materials can be reused.

💙 Log houses are famously healthy buildings. The natural ability of logs to breathe maintains indoor air quality, reducing the risk of moisture and mold. This improves the health and well-being of residents, particularly those with allergies and asthma. Additionally, the natural warmth and acoustic properties of wood create a pleasant and soothing living environment.

Our HTWS window, which integrates into the structure of the house, creates the illusion that the interior ceiling continues seamlessly from the inside of the house to the terrace. 💙 It is possible to use the same type of paneling on the ceiling both indoors and outdoors, enhancing the effect.

🌲Spruce wood is an excellent choice for building material for many reasons, one of the most notable being its small knots. The knots in spruce wood are significantly smaller compared to the large knots in pine, resulting in a more uniform appearance for log or panel walls.

🌲 Additionally, when painted, spruce wood offers a smoother and more consistent surface, where the knots are not as prominent as in pine. The small knots blend better with the paint, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing finish without distracting knot marks. 💙

💙 For a better tomorrow. 💙

Wood is the best building material for the environment. The carbon footprint of a log house is smaller than that of a house built from any other building material. A log house stores carbon throughout its long lifecycle, and only a fraction of the energy is needed to produce a log house compared to a stone house. We source the raw material for our houses only from responsibly managed Finnish forests. We want nature to recommend us as a company that respects it.

💙 Our sincere desire is to promote the health and well-being of our customers. Wood has numerous benefits for health and well-being. The monolithic wall structure of a solid wooden house functions naturally and correctly for hundreds of years. It creates a safe and mold-free environment for its inhabitants. The wooden wall structure balances indoor humidity to an optimal level for breathing, enhancing the overall well-being of the residents.

💙 Wooden surfaces are beneficial for both the body and the mind and are warm to the touch.

💎 The number of working hours performed at the factory on our houses is remarkably high. Our building components are highly prefabricated, which means that less work needs to be done on the construction site. This significantly speeds up construction and improves the quality and precision of the work.

💎 Thanks to our millimeter-precise work, completely trimless construction is possible. 💙

Large glass windows – aren't glass walls cold?

💙 Our HTWS window, developed through our own product development, is integrated directly into the wall structure. We have designed the structure with maximum attention to sealing aspects.

💙 The insulation capability of building materials is indicated by the U-value, also known as the heat transfer coefficient. The lower the U-value, the better the material's insulation capability. The U-value of our HTWS windows is 0.6 W/m²K, which is better than that of so-called regular windows (1.0 W/m²K). The U-value of a laminated log wall varies between 0.4–0.6 W/m²K, depending on the thickness of the log.

💙 So, a glass wall is not quite as warm as a thick laminated log wall, but thanks to the implementation of the HTWS window, we come quite close to the values of a log wall.

Did you know that spruce produces less resin than pine? 🌲

Spruce secretes less resin than pine, and the resin in spruce is mainly located in the heartwood and branches. Pine, on the other hand, secretes more resin, especially in warm conditions, and resinous pockets can also be found in the outer wood.

💙 The lower resin secretion of spruce makes it a favorable option for surface treatment and painting, as the resin does not easily rise to the surface and cause paint to blister or peel. Due to this characteristic, spruce is a superior raw material and surface material for log houses and other buildings.

💙 Here is one of our most desired details. 💙

Thanks to our HTWS window, the wall continues seamlessly both inside and outside the window. Our patented HTWS window, a result of our own product development, integrates directly into the wall structure stylishly without moldings or visible frames.

Can a log house have an entire wall of glass, and how is that possible?

A Polar Life Haus log house can indeed have floor-to-ceiling glass walls. This is made possible by our patented non-settling log structure combined with our integrated HTWS windows.

Photos from Polar Life Haus's post 17/05/2024

☀ Thanks to the HTWS windows extending from floor to ceiling and the large glass sliding doors, the interior spaces of the house are bathed in delightful and energizing sunlight. The continuous ceiling panel gives the illusion of the interior space extending outside.

How much does a log darken over time?

Pine has traditionally been the raw material for log houses in Finland, and perhaps for that reason, it is often assumed that log walls darken significantly. Pine wood is darker and more variegated than spruce, and it also darkens significantly over time.

🌲 At Polar Life Haus, we have always manufactured log homes using spruce wood alongside pine. Nowadays, our customers prefer a lighter log surface, and we now make almost all log houses from lighter and less knotty spruce logs. Spruce logs also darken over time, but not nearly as much as pine. Additionally, spruce has superior moisture resistance, which also supports its use in construction. 💙

💙 This magnificent individual sauna building with a suite is located in Pallas, at the Jeris Lakeside Resort's Arctic Sauna World. The Repo sauna was designed by the Italian architect Paolo Caravello, and it beautifully combines wooden structures with glass surfaces.

💙 In the upper floor of the sauna, there is a suite with a unique skylight that offers a stunning view of Lake Jeris and the opportunity to admire sunsets and the Northern Lights.

💙 In the mountain village of Pyhätunturi in Finland, Hotel Kultakero II has now also been completed next to the previously finished Kultakero I about a year ago. From the impressive suites on the top floor of this log hotel, there are magnificent views of the surrounding Lappish nature, complete with Northern Lights. These suites are also available for rent, and one penthouse suite can accommodate up to ten people with extra beds. The interior design of the hotel has been created by Tiina Marja Kaislakannas.

🍽 An Italian-style restaurant, Popolo, has also opened on the ground floor of Kultakero II 🇮🇹. The interior design of the restaurant is handled by Joanna Laajisto.

How much does a log wall settle?

Traditionally, it has been assumed that log walls settle over the years, and this is expected to limit the design and interior decorating of log houses.

💙 However, Polar Life Haus's patented non-settling log structure enables a genuinely non-settling log house. As a result, there is no need for settlement gaps or adjustment bolts in the house. Our non-settling structure allows for large window surfaces and construction without trim mouldings. Nowadays, nearly all our log houses in Finland are built with a non-settling structure.

We still deliver a slightly higher number of so-called traditional log houses for export. A typical laminated log wall settles about 1 cm per meter.

💙 This round log house, model Kuohu, is located in Germany. Our product range also includes traditional round log houses, which we manufacture from both spruce and pine. Laminated round logs are also available.

💙 Our Polar collection is nearly 20 years old! 💙

Looking at the models, you certainly wouldn't believe it, as the timeless design of Polar models is just as functional today as it was 20 years ago. The architecture draws inspiration from the traditional chalets of the Alps and Central European timber framing, combining them with modern spaciousness and large glass surfaces.

From this popular collection, you can find models ranging from small sauna cabins to houses over 400 square meters. Of course, if you wish, we can design your very own Polar model. 💙
