Anyone else experience mixed emotions when it comes to sugar? 🤣
This week is Dental Health Week here in Australia!
And this year the topic is the dreaded SUGAR 🍭🍩🍇 🧃🍯
Specifically, hidden sugars!
So why is sugar bad for your teeth?
In really basic terms fermentable carbohydrates such as sugars and starches feed the bacteria that cause tooth decay!! Which leads to holes in your teeth! 🦷
Why does this matter?
Well it matters because sugar and our intake of sugar is one really important element in dental disease that is within our control!
We can control how much sugar we expose our teeth to! And decrease the rates of decay! 🎉
I’m going to assume most of us realise the usual culprits - lollies, ice-cream, soft drink, jam, Tim Tam’s etc contain copious amounts of sugar.
What you may not realise is that it is added to soooo many other foods
A lot of which are advertised and promoted as health foods 😡🤬 such as low fat yoghurts, cereals, protein bars, pasta sauce, soup!
[Basically most processed and premade foods]
And sugar isn’t just added under the obvious name “sugar”, it’s added to foods under a heap of other names, many of which a lot of us would have never heard of!
[If you swipe across I’ve added a photo the ADA has released of the many names sugars can come under]
So how can you avoid these hidden sugars?
An easy way is to avoid eating processed foods. Stick to whole foods! Fruit and vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains.
Make things from scratch yourself. We all seem to have a little more time on our hands at the moment, get creative! Instead of buying premade soup or pasta sauce, make your own! You will know exactly what is going into it, it tastes 100x better, will save on single use plastic and decrease your environmental impact as well! 🌏

Sustainability. What is it? Why should you care? And what does it have to do with the dental industry? In my role as a Colgate Advocate for Oral Health, I explore what sustainability actually is. If COVID and recent conversations about discrimination have taught us anything, it is that sustainability is more important than ever and we have a long way to go.
So let’s get the conversation started 👊🏻
And let’s start talking about what we, as dental and healthcare professionals can do to work towards a better future 🌏💕. Please ‘comment’ your thoughts, tips and suggestions in relation to sustainability and how you think we can all make a difference 🙌🏻

With most of us (if not all of us) spending our days at home in isolation, unable to work with the recent level 3 restrictions, now is the perfect time to sit back, reassess and work out which areas of our practice may need attention. An area of dentistry that at times gets neglected by those of us who are new to the industry is communication. For all the recent grads out there, I picked the brains of some of my mentors and put together an article for Colgate on how to better communicate in dentistry. Big thank you to my mentor and the better half of this duo, Dr Sam Koh for his help ☺️

Communication: The Transition From Student to Dentist Communication in dentistry has always been a challenge, even for the most experienced of dentists. For those who have just entered the world of dentistry as new graduates, the idea of effective communication can be overwhelming. Fear not, here are 10 tips from those who have survived this transition...
To help celebrate Nurses Week I had the privilege of writing an article for Scrubs Mag. For anyone living a busy life, check out my 4 tips on how to stay healthy!
How You Take Control of Your Health When You're Busy Kicking Goals To start with, I thought I should provide a little information about who I am.
So proud to be a part of the Cherokee family and to have been able to celebrate Nurses Week with so many inspirational people 🙌🏻
Thank you all for being a part of our nurses week celebration. Cherokee Uniforms and Scrubs Magazine is honored to work with and celebrate nurses from around the world.

Spending my holidays drawing teeth 😝 For an update on what caries is and how you can prevent those pesky cavities, check out my blog post ✌🏻 Link in bio
What inspires you? 🤔 I believe we absorb the energy of those around us and as a consequence I surround myself by those who radiate positivity. I'm inspired by all of those I am close to, from my partner, to my family, friends and even my dogs! 🐶🐶 But I am also inspired and drawn to those who are passionate about what they do. Recently I've been listening to a podcast series by Tim Ferriss, where he basically interviews really interesting people. People who are passionate and driven 🙌🏻 And there is nothing more inspiring than seeing someone pursuing their goals and doing something they love! [definitely check out the Tim Ferriss podcast if you haven't already listened to it].
Happy World Oral Health Day! Here are some tips from the University of Sydney oral health community 👌🏼🙌🏻
Also don't forget to check out TheSydneyDentist.com for more details on how to brush and floss correctly 👌🏼
Happy brushing!

ORAL HEALTH || Yesterday I had the privilege of teaching some children how to brush and floss correctly. It's such a satisfying feeling to know that I am contributing positively to their dental experience and that with my help we can lay down the foundations for perfect at home care of their little teeth. The habits they form now will last a life time! And it's a lot easier to form good habits from the start! We went over the proper technique for brushing, with the help of a tricoloured disclosing solution. Disclosing solutions are great- they show up exactly where the patients are missing when the brush and floss/interdental brush. The tricoloured solution shows up new, old and caries producing bacteria! I'd love to hear about how you teach patients oral care! What tools do you use?

👨🏻⚕️👩🏼⚕️|| C L I N I C || Back in the clinic today learning about local anaesthesia landmarks! Lucky me, I get to play patient today 😐 Lucky we're only using cotton buds to mimic needles today haha 😂
Meal Prep 🥗🥑 I've added sauerkraut to all my lunches this week. Sauerkraut is basically fermented cabbage. The best part about fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi is that they are full of probiotics, which are amazing for your gut!
Did you know gut health is a major component of your immune system?
And that the health of your gut is dependent on the health and type of bacteria it contains?
The bacteria that live in your gut are know collectively as your intestinal flora and imbalances in this flora have been associated with various chronic diseases.
Probiotics help feed, nurture and populate your gut with good bacteria, keeping it balanced and functioning optimally! What's your favourite fermented food? And how do you look after your gut?
🙌🏻🙌🏻 Week one of second year is over! It hasn't been the most interesting week....full of admin and orientation lectures. Necessary but boring to say the least. Next week we are straight into our DMD2 content 💕💕 First ever Exo lectures on Monday!

Soaking up my last day of freedom 🙌🏻 My second year of Dentistry starts tomorrow. Let the long hours and intense learning begin 🤓🤓 dentalschool
Hello weekend 👋🏼👋🏼
This chick and I
🍜 || I feel like that is the closest emoji to a salad bowl? And in this case, a lazy man salad bowl. 1 packet of ranch slaw mix (red and white cabbage, carrot shredded and obviously minus the horrid dressing 🤐), I then added some finely chopped jalapeño's, coriander, red onion and pickled chillies 🌶. Throw it all together with some (LOTS) of lime juice and olive oil. Topped with grilled Barramundi 👌🏼
Best. Day. Ever. ||

S W E E T || Came home from work craving something sweet! So instead of consuming store bought chocolate 🍫 which is full of ingredients I can hardly say, I decided to make a healthy version of peanut butter cups! Refined sugar free, dairy free and with almond butter instead! So yummy 😋The best part is you feel completely satisfied after just one, so no binging!
Morning swims at North Bondi and cold brew from Bondi Hall. Could it get any better?
