UPCOMING: Matthew Barney’s solo exhibition SECONDARY: object impact will open on 7 June in our Paris gallery. An exhibition of four parts, other sequential presentations will be on view at Gladstone Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ and Regen Projects.

Each arm of the exhibition traces back to Barney’s 2023 film, SECONDARY, a five-channel work that draws inspiration from the infamous 1978 Raiders vs. Patriots game in which defensive back Jack Tatum delivered an open field hit that left wide receiver Darryl Stingley permanently paralysed. For his installation at Galerie Max Hetzler, Barney will present a series of objects that address the concept of impact as both a physical interaction and a theoretical system of exchange.

Beatriz Milhazes’ special project for the Venice Biennale Arte 2024 is now open at the Applied Arts Pavilion, Sale d’Armi, Arsenale – a collaboration between Victoria and Albert Museum, London and La Biennale di Venezia.

Beatriz Milhazes’s works are on show at the end of the Esposizione Internationale (International Exhibition) in the Padiglione Arti Applicate – PAA (Applied Arts Pavilion) at the Arsenale, adjacent to the National Pavilions for Mexico, UAE, South Africa and Argentina.

UPCOMING: Mark Grotjahn’s inaugural solo exhibition with Galerie Max Hetzler, ‘Kitchens’, will open on Thursday, 25 April, in our Berlin gallery at Potsdamer Straße 77-87.

Over the course of three decades, Mark Grotjahn has produced a diverse oeuvre which pushes the boundaries of visual language. Encompassing painting, drawing and sculpture, his multimedia practice foregrounds the tensions and intersections between the abstract and figurative divide. The artist works in distinctive series with a meticulous, almost obsessive drive. Treading the line between geometry and gesture, Grotjahn has developed a unique pictorial lexicon that is at once idiosyncratic and continually evolving.

Friedrich Kunath’s duo show with Margarete Jakschik, ‘Only Lovers Left’, is currently on view at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, until 9 June.

In their first joint exhibition, the artists transform the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf into a space of contemplation, reflection and melancholy. The exhibition presents photographs, paintings and installations by Kunath and Jakschik, thus bringing their aesthetic positions into focus. The artists capture journeys both inward and out, reckoning with the legacy of German Romanticism while unraveling its conceptual ironies and clichéed motifs of longing. In other words, the Romantic is brought firmly into the present.

LAST WEEK: Barry Flanagan’s solo exhibition ‘Sculpture is always going on’ is currently on view in our Berlin galleries at Bleibtreustraße 45 and Bleibtreustraße 15/16, until this Saturday, 13 April.

‘For Flanagan, sculpture was as much sound, light, film and performance as it was bronze and carving. He consistently exposed processes in every medium he used throughout his career. He included direct object casts in bronze sculptures and allowed parts of the armature to show through strips of clay or plaster, thereby recording and revealing the processes of its making. It is aptly contradictory then, that the fleeting hare should become a monument to time and duration, channeling the quixotic, mysterious propositions implicit in the early work.’

LAST WEEK: Adam Pendleton’s solo exhibition, ‘These Gestures Towards You’, is on view in our London gallery, until this Saturday, 13 April.

Presenting a single work composed of 45 ceramic paintings alongside a selection of 5 drawings, the exhibition draws on notions of abstraction, translation and transference. ‘For me,’ the artist states, ‘abstraction is not to replicate the known, but rather to give opportunity for the unknown, for the unimagined, for the unrealised.’
