We had a fox 🦊 take a flock chickens, a flood wash out a year’a compost, and a tree put an end to our old coop. 12 years going and the last four have the most difficult. Thankfully a generous neighbor was kind enough to donate a trailer. From the rumble and scraps Import Local has a chicken tractor ( roof coming soon) Eat local Shop moms and pops.
After the death of our SCOBY mother of ten years, we’ve grown a new one from droplets of what remained of her. It was so slow of a process. But now we can make kombucha again.
The Communal No-till garden is growing well so far. The plastic seems to be keeping weeds down and the tomatoes and peppers love last year’s food waste. Hopefully, the natural pesticides like garlic, shallots, onions, and Carolina praying mantises keep the critters off the crop. Thanks for the support.

A major New York Times investigation reveals how the United States' aquifers are becoming severely depleted due to overuse in part from huge industrial farms and sprawling cities. The Times reports that Kansas corn yields are plummeting due to a lack of water, there is not enough water to support the construction of new homes in parts of Phoenix, Arizona, and rivers across the country are drying up as aquifers are being drained far faster than they are refilling. "It can take millions of years to fill an aquifer, but they can be depleted in 50 years," says Warigia Bowman, director of sustainable energy and natural resources law at the University of Tulsa College of Law. "All coastal regions in the United States are really being threatened by groundwater and aquifer problems."

Local horse farm in Lunenburg has for years been generous enough with sharing their manure pile with us that we mix with our own worm castings.
This reaffirms the need to buy and shop local as much as possible. Major food companies from pretty much every grocery store play a part in this supply chain fiasco unfolding. The New York Times reports:
We speak with the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Hannah Dreier, who revealed in a major New York Times investigation the widespread exploitation of migrant children in some of the most dangerous jobs in the country. In response, the Biden administration on Monday announced it would carry out a broad crackdown on the use of migrant child labor in the United States, vowing stricter enforcement of labor standards and better support for migrant children. "These kids are just on their own in these situations, with very little resources and very few ways out," says Dreier. We are also joined by Gregory Chen, senior director of government relations for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, who says migrant children need better protection from unscrupulous employers and others who would seek to exploit them. "Children don't have any knowledge or understanding of what their legal rights are," says Chen.

Buying local from a local, a theme we have been supporting at Import Local now, for over a decade. The idea of democratizing the most fundamental human need, which is food through dual circulation within the economy. Keeping small family business and alive that produce "clean foods" or organic foods takes a willingness to make an effort to support a local farmer even if it might cost a few extra dollars. Here is a story we will following in the coming months .

Imitation: the is one of the highest forms of flattery. In this case the City of Boston offers composting without the perks of knowing how your kitchen waste is converted into soil and the all natural clean food products that Import Local contributors receive from composting us. We use all nature means and a no-till garden from which our food products come from. Know the difference!

Things are slowly coming together at a partner farm in Lunenburg after a set of predator attacks took some of her flock and wiped out all of ours. Notice the pigs. They eat well and the one making a cameo in the photo is up for slaughter this November, so we will be sharing the meat. Keep it in mind and keep composting.
Hey Boston Contributors,
We have some bad news to report. A fox has taken a flock of chickens to her den this past week and a skunk 🦨 stole whatever eggs were left. Also out partner in Lunenburg suffered a huge loss with a fisher cat attack. These two situations has made for a lack in fresh eggs. Sorry if we don’t have enough for everybody this weekend. Last year there was a bear attack. It seems getting you absolutely all natural food comes at a cost. We try to keep our cost low and fees affordable in spite of inflation. But nature comes with its twists. Please be patient with us as we rebuild the enclosures and let the spring chickens grow to egg-laying size. Feel free to comment or message us with any concerns. Peace
Update on the Pigs: All the pigs seem to be growing wicked fast and eating a ton (literally) in industrial food scraps from a local hospital whose kitchen keeps supporting our food repurposing operation. Here they are eating mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, pasta, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, and pizza. These pigs enjoy high grade food that has been cleaned of its impurities at Import Local. Sustainable food solutions. Eat well!
