Attention residents: beginning next week any pumpkins left outside will be picked up by our grounds crew. If you do not want your pumpkin picked up, please move your pumpkin inside. Residents in living centers should remove their pumpkins from hallways and dispose before they begin to decompose. Pumpkins left on carpet to rot will result in a cleaning fee. Pumpkins may be picked up sooner if they are decomposing - decomposing pumpkins are a tasty treat for critters and bugs. 🎃

Students can donate unopened, non-perishable foods, gently used clothing, and other home goods to benefit our local and campus community. Boxes are already placed and ready for donations in MJBH, LCS, and LCSW lobbies. This is a great option for students who have things they’d prefer not to pack up and move next week 😉

Happy Holidays!! As we close out the semester, a few reminders...
1.) Books can be returned to the Bookstore [look for rental due dates] and/or sold if you prefer not to keep.
2.) Students do not have to move out completely and will keep their key; we encourage taking home any valuables and items needed for winter break. Rooms must left in health/safety condition. Students in first year areas MUST check out with the RA before leaving. Upperclass (second year+) students are not required to leave for winter break but please stay in touch with your roommate(s) so they know where you are. Various project work is still taking place over winter break so SVSU personnel may be keying in over winter break to prepare for summer projects; units specifically affected will be emailed directly.
3.) All first year students must vacate within 24 hours of their final exam OR by Friday, 12/16/22, 4pm. Exceptions can email [email protected] for consideration.
4.) Dining will close for winter break on Friday, 12/16/22 and will re-open for first meal on Sunday, 1/8/23. While first year students are invited back on Friday, 1/6/23, starting at 8:00am, you will need to bring food or use your kitchens until Sunday's first meal.
5.) The university will close starting 12/23/22 and will re-open on 1/3/2023. Anyone approved to stay or in upperclass areas can use the RA duty phone for emergent items.
6.) Mail/packages will have limited delivery and high volume as we open in January with no services when the university is closed. Remember, SVSU does not participate in Saturday service.
7.) There is still availability for Fall 2023/Winter 2024. The contract opened on December 1st and a completed contract with $200 prepayment will have a Room Selection date/time assigned on the your home screen in the housing portal. Roommate Matching will start in January, stay tuned.
8.) Check the SVSU email periodically over winter break. The university is still open outside the class session dates and many offices are sending important communication to you for action items.
THANK YOU for an amazing fall semester. This is the time your stress peaks; lean on your support systems for reassurance and love even more...all of the campus community is cheering for you! We wish you and your families all the best this holiday season and cannot wait to see YOU again in 2023!

The SVSU campus community is pleased to welcome George Grant Jr. to serve as the institution’s fifth president. Today (Tuesday, Aug. 9) the SVSU Board of Control announced the appointment during a special meeting. Grant will succeed Donald Bachand, who is retiring after serving as president since 2014.

Grant is currently serving as chancellor of Pennsylvania State University-Berks, a campus of more than 2,100 students. Prior to that, he spent 24 years at Grand Valley State University, including 12 years as dean of the College of Community and Public Service.

“We are delighted that Chancellor Grant has agreed to join SVSU and serve as our next president,” said Vicki Rupp, chair of the SVSU Board of Control. “He is a caring, committed and innovative leader with an outstanding record of success in academic program development, fundraising, and community outreach, among many accomplishments.

A Detroit native, he welcomes the opportunity to return to his home state and to join a university that aligns with his values. He will begin his duties at SVSU December 1.

“I know the history and tradition of SVSU. Its people have a passion for academic exploration and achievement, and it continues to ensure that the opportunities of higher education are attainable to assist students in meeting their full potential,” Grant said.

Dawn Iseler’s position at SVSU is the Director of Auxiliary Operations for Housing Operations, however, that title doesn’t begin to encapsulate what Dawn contributes to the university. Dawn is a two-time graduate of SVSU, earning both her Bachelor of Business Administration and her Master of Business Administration as a Cardinal. As a student, Dawn knew that the campus community was different at SVSU, with supportive employees and mentors around every corner. Dawn began working for SVSU as a student and has been employed in a variety of offices on campus. “When I come into the entrance of campus, I never feel like I’m punching in,” Dawn shared. “I feel like every day is a fresh start and a new opportunity.”

Dawn works primarily with Housing Operations, which is a vital part of any university. One of Dawn’s favorite moments within her role is check-in for freshman housing during the beginning of the school year. “The energy from freshman check-in sustains you for the whole academic year!” Dawn smiled. However, Dawn cites the people at SVSU as her favorite part of her job. “The faculty, staff, and students are amazing. I feel like I could do almost any job on campus to make my hands useful, but it’s the people I see every day that make it all worthwhile.”

Dawn’s leadership and motivational spirit is inspirational to many that encounter her. Dawn’s focus is always on the students. “I think a lot of what I value and hopefully emulate in my leadership is helping one student at a time. There’s no way to help the masses, but you can help students individually,” Dawn stated. “Being able to advocate for them and provide process improvement when needed is a key part of my job. My focus is not simply answering an email quickly, but giving students something extra or uplifting so they don’t feel just like a number.”

Thank you, Dawn, for sharing your story and exemplifying Red Pride!
