Attention Nebraska and Western Iowa Veterans!

Based upon our continued commitment to keep our Veterans safe while also continuing to provide Veterans with the care they need, please be aware that effective Friday, January 7, 2022, VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System facilities will be shifting to a temporary “No Visitors” policy due to the current increase in the number of COVID-19 cases taking place within our local communities.

During this temporary policy change, please be aware that several visitation rules will be in effect, to include the following:

• Outpatient visitors are not allowed, however if a Veteran needs a caregiver/taker to assist them for a scheduled appointment, this will be permitted. NWI also discourages minor children from accompanying Veterans to appointments due to COVID risk, however these children may accompany their Veteran to an appointment at the discretion of their medical provider. All caregivers/takers and children must screen negative for COVID symptoms to enter a VA NWIHCS medical facility. Children 5 and over must wear a VA-issued medical/surgical grade mask currently available at the entrances to our facilities.

• Inpatient visitors and the time lengths of visitations will be limited. No children under the age of 18 will be permitted on inpatient units. All visitors will be required to wear a VA-issued medical/surgical grade mask currently available at the entrances to our facilities. Veterans and visitors are also encouraged to explore other options, to include telephone or video-connect visitations.

For more information, please talk with your medical provider.

We look forward to resuming increased visitor access once the current increase in COVID-19 cases subside.

This holiday weekend remember

On May 8, 1970, Lance Corporal Miguel Keith, of Omaha, was seriously wounded in an attack on his platoon in Vietnam. Despite his wounds, he pushed on, killing several enemy soldiers and dispersing an estimated 25 more in the defense of his platoon. For these actions he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Today, the U.S. Navy is christening the USS Miguel Keith in his honor. To coincide with that, I am proclaiming today Lance Corporal Miguel Keith Day here in Nebraska in honor of his bravery and sacrifice.

Learn more about LCPL Keith’s incredible story and watch the christening live at 11:35 a.m. at http://miguelkeith.org/

The 2021 Nebraska DAV Auxiliary State Convention in Broken Bow, Ne is canceled.

Last week the State Executive Committee was contacted with the vote and a majority have replied voting to approve. The decision to place the vote before the committee was not taken lightly. Covid cases are rising and the lack of voting members attending, along with the high costs of holding a Convention all contributed to this decision.

I would like to thank all of the Executive Committee for responding quickly, as well as every Auxiliary member for continuing to do all we can for our community veterans and their families.
