This Saturday will be another “double dip” for Jamie Taylor and I. We will be participating in the Bandshell Bash with a bunch of other fantastic musical acts from our local area. Our set is 2:45-3:30. This has become one of my most favorite local events where a whole bunch of musicians get together and celebrate each other’s gifts!!! Such an awesome community building and entertaining event.

Then that evening we will be crossing the bridge to perform at Hank’s from 9pm-midnight (Both EST).

We are so lucky and blessed to be given the opportunities we have to share our craft and passion to a community that appreciates it.

4/19 7pm CT the OCC Jazz and Commercial Music Ensembles will be performing at the John D Stull Theater on Olney Central’s Main Campus. These bands have been working diligently all year and I’m very excited for them to present a snippet of that hard work for you tomorrow evening. Admission is free but we are accepting free will donations towards helping the department provide equipment/masterclasses/experiences for our students.

I’m ecstatic about the trajectory this program is heading. We have 19 new freshman who have signed music tuition waivers for next year (the largest signing class I’ve had in my 6yrs), will be fielding 4 rock bands next year and have at least 3 MAJOR announcements to be made about upgrading our facilities/program when everything is final (almost there).

If you or anyone you know is interested in continuing participating in music past high school, wants to major in music at a 4yr university but could use the benefit of getting gen Ed classes paid for while focusing on getting their audition together or just someone who’s always wanted to be in a band…..please send them my way. First studio session for a client in “The Dungeon Recording Studio” located on campus at Olney Central College! More announcements to come on availability, equipment lists, different services & pricing as well as examples of what we’re capable of accomplishing in our facilities! We are extremely excited to be able to open our facilities to the public and create a resource for our musician community to have a space to be creative and document their work!!!

This Saturday evening, Jamie Taylor and I will be performing a wide variety of tunes at one of our favorite local establishments, Kelso’s 19th Hole, from 8-11pm ET in Vincennes, IN. I’m extremely excited to perform for people in our hometown community but equally excited to partake in their INCREDIBLE ribeye steak meal they offer. Kelso’s provides an all ages, family friendly, clean and extremely comfortable atmosphere that caters to their customers. Last month, we maxed out their capacity and I know people have been making reservations for tomorrow for a couple of weeks so PLEASE call in to reserve yourself a spot at a table or the bar top. I hate seeing people who would like to join in on the fun having to be turned away at the door due to seating inavailability!

Hi all!!! I’m in my 6th year as Director of Bands at Olney Central College and extremely excited about what we have going on in the Department. The instrumental program grew by over 100% from last year to this year and things are starting to happen again post Covid!!!

1) I’m incredibly interested in meeting all of the local band program directors and students as well as musicians who’ve debated going back to school to learn more about music. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any interest in free college education.

2) My goal is to start making higher education (or at least their first 2 years of it) available at a nearly cost free rate to any students in Southern IL/IN. At OCC we have tuition waivers that are available to students who participate in our Ensembles. These students DO NOT NEED TO BE MUSIC MAJORS. For participation in 3 Ensembles, any waiver holder can have UP TO 20 credit hours PER SEMESTER paid for by the music department.

The Ensembles OCC currently offers:

Instrumental:

Concert Band - They play repertoire from the Wind Band literature. This band performed at Carnegie Hall June 2019 and we have some interesting prospects of performance opportunities lining up in 2024!

Community Band - Meets every Tuesday 2nd semester only.

Big Band - This group plays music from the Big Band era through modern arrangements by some of the finest big band composers in the history of the music.

Jazz Combo - This group plays music from the standard jazz repertoire and the main educational focus of the group is teaching about improvisation.

Contemporary Music Ensemble - This group is essentially our “Rock Band” Ensemble. The purpose of this ensemble is to teach students who have expressed interest in being able to immediately go out and make money as working musicians and how they can successfully navigate that realm.

Tonight Seraph Brass will be playing a concert in the OCC Theater!!! I’ve been excited for this concert since I saw it’s posting. This should be a most excellent evening of music. I encourage you to carve out time in your evening to check this out!!!

Southeastern Illinois Concert Association is hosting their 2nd concert of the 22-23 season. On February 6th, you have the opportunity to see and hear an internationally known group of 5 beautiful ladies called SERAPH BRASS. They are a dynamic ensemble that have toured throughout the US, Mexico, China and Europe. Many of the members toured with Adele on her American tour. They are the winners of the 2019 American Prize in Chamber Music and play several genres of music on their various instruments. The concert will be held at 7:00 in the OCC theatre. Individual tickets are available for $20/adult; $5/student. You are also invited to join our membership at a reduced rate to see the 3 remaining concerts of the season. Today is the big day!!!! The OCC Instrumental Music Dept will be presenting our Fall Gala Concert this evening at 5pm CT. We’ve got some Rock N Roll, Jazz and Wind Band literature to share with you. Had a SUPER fun and productive rehearsal with my former students Josh Moats and Trevor Parrent last night for their show this coming Saturday at the Olney Eagles.

Now I’ve sat through countless rehearsals in my musical career and I will have to say the boys had clear concise ideas about each tune we played, conveyed these ideas in very intelligent, diplomatic and precise ways and kept the entire hang SUPER fun while allowing the bassist and I musical freedom to display our own musical voices and ideas.

For an entire two hours I felt like a proud father watching (and participating in) this all go down before my eyes. I could not be more proud of the hard work these young men have been putting in as they cultivate their own brand and sound.

The OCC Music Department Alumni (since my hire, at least) are doin the thing and it’s not JUST these cats. Kyle Beaman, Triston Mitchel & Ivan Robinson are out giving as Blue Fluid, Kyle is also with the Hangovers, Julian Brewer is out gigging with the Tuesdays, James Whitfield is making all kinds of music, Austin Ferrari is making stages look pretty with his lighting schemes all over the Midwest, Marvel Carraway is touring all over the country & internationally, So-Hyun Park is back in Korea doin the thing and many others are playing in community based groups.
