#79 Life Altering Event – Shifting Perspectives
https://youtu.be/mWAoFoNh2Zo

Growing up, many of us fell into what my friend and guest Robert S. Johnson calls the “Main Character Syndrome.” But it's not until we leave that environment and face culture shock that we start questioning ourselves. Will I fit in? Am I good enough? Will this be a lasting, positive experience?

We all want the same things - to be accepted, to have an opportunity, and to make a difference.

Thankfully, there are people like Robert Johnson, the Executive Director Of Multicultural Affairs at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. He is an experienced higher education professional with a passion for educating and enlightening underrepresented students.

His current work consists of establishing programming for underrepresented student populations, advocating for underserved student groups, and educating all members of his community on intercultural competency.

Check out the video where he shares his insights on life-altering events that shift perspectives. Let's learn from his wisdom and experience to help make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those around us.

Inside the Spaghetti Bowl 26/02/2024

Like many "baby boomers" my family faced the difficult task of burying our mother a few years ago. She would have been 92 next week.

Losing a parent is a traumatic experience, regardless of age. We all miss our loved ones every day.

After the funeral of a our mother, my brothers and I wrote a book about family and unconditional love. "Inside the Spaghetti Bowl" tells the story of a family that sticks together through thick and thin.

We hope it brings back memories of your own family and brings a smile to your face.

It became our obsession so we drank the kool-aid and did whatever was needed. Then it happened. The big corner office, the power, the prestige, the money, the influence, the large staff, but it didn’t give us the joy we imaged.

Now what? What’s missing? Were we simply chasing a myth? Scott Mason reached the summit as a lawyer. He had it all so why wasn’t he happy? But more importantly what did he do about it? Let’s find out.

Every evolving servant leader knows that running an organization requires making decisions. However, it's common for "Business Leaders" to freeze or panic when faced with making a decision. Why is that?

Decision-making can be difficult, and the stakes can be high. But as leaders, it's important to have confidence in our abilities to make informed decisions.

Trust your instincts, gather all the necessary information, weigh the pros and cons, and make the best decision possible. Remember, not making a decision is also a decision, and it could have consequences. As leaders, we must be decisive and take action when necessary.

Life Altering Event #77 – Breaking the Generational Cycle
https://youtu.be/aq4p3r4IyLg

Tristan Schmidt, an alumnus of the University of Iowa, has just been accepted into a Doctoral Program at Ohio State University. In a recent discussion, he shared his experience of growing up in rural America and how he is working in education to help change the “generational cycle.”

In parts of our country, where you are born often determines what you will become, and this is not limited to large inner cities. Unfortunately, small rural towns face many of the same circumstances. We often hear things like "it was good enough for your grandparents and parents," "college is a luxury we can’t afford," and "people in this community do this work."

So, how can we break this cycle? Join Tristan and me as we explore ways to change mindsets and promote personal development, resilience, and grit. Let's work together to uplift student success, especially those who are part of the TRIO, Upward Bound, and student affairs programs.

Let's strive for a better quality of life for everyone.

Expanding Student’s Horizons
Guest - DaWayne D. Nettles
https://youtu.be/K4F0m_JqbQA

When no one in your family ever went to college, it is difficult to see yourself at 15 years old spending 3 years in high school and then another 4 to 6 years in college. “That’s over half my life. Then what? I’ll have student loan and no job. Why not get a job right out of high school, as a driver, warehouse worker, barber, construction etc. I’ll be able to make some money right away, get a car, & help my family”.

I know that feeling. I was there. All I could see was today not 10 or 20 years down the road. Fortunately, there are people like DaWayne Nettles who helps those 15-year-olds and their families understand and show them a way to break this cycle.

About DaWayne

He is the director of the University of South Carolina TRIO and Upward Bound Program. He uses culturally relevant educational practices, leadership development, educational technology, leadership development, and educational reform to expand his student’s horizons.

DaWayne is an educator, mentor, hip-hop enthusiast, and Call Me MISTER Program graduate. He holds a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from Benedict College and Columbia College, respectively. Life Altering Event #74 – Building a Future Ready Generation 22/01/2024

Life Altering Event #74 – Building a Future Ready Generation with guest speaker Moïse.

According to many futurists, 65% of pre-school children today will work in a job or career that doesn’t currently exist. But can we train students and business leaders on something that does not exist? The answer is yes!

Garry Moïse suggests that schools and businesses can teach the skills needed to succeed in the future. These skills include leadership, social/cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and critical thinking.

It is essential to teach these skills from the earliest days in school and reinforce them in business because these skills are required regardless of industry or profession.

Getting Unstuck in Life 12/01/2024

Getting stuck is inevitable – staying stuck is a choice
My article has been published by NACA.
https://www.naca.org/resource/getting-unstuck-in-life-1-11-2024.html

We all get stuck, frustrated, depressed, anxious, frustrated, and disappointed. We are like the car stuck in the mud or a snow bank at times. We keep pushing on the gas, but the wheels just keep spinning. The rut we are in gets deeper until we feel we are running in quicksand. It seems the harder we try, the more stuck we become, and like quicksand, we sink until we simply give up.

Trust the Process:

Throughout life friends, jobs, lovers, association, etc. change for a variety of reasons. At times these changes fill us with sadness & regret.

Here is a quote that helped me navigate these difficult changes. I hope it helps you.

"There comes a point in your life when you realize: who matters, who never did, who won’t anymore, and who always will…So don’t worry about people from your past; there’s a reason they didn’t make it to your future".
