It was the Odudu
Who opened the ritual
He begin the dance...
by walking forward
Head erect...
Masked wigs

The paddle.
A kind of dance
Steps moving toward Oseremen
The right foot trailing in faint
Within the circle
Where an Edion died

The greetings winds
Passed by the drummer
Matched the the dances
As the Odudu approached...
We bowed

The dating stance
Walks toe, heel toe, and heel
As tradition demand in introduction
Left sequence to eight counts
Moving toward me Oseremen
Left over right
Right over left
The son of the deceased

I write of it
As the memory
Dancing toward me
The poet and the cowries
Edition of a culture
The boyfriend of the dance
Write of the juju
Staged to the right with a spin
Step out with both prints
And spurns one full turn to the right
The direction of the coming moon
There I faced when I was born

Now I observe...
Scribbles on my note and clap
And watch the drummer repeat this sequence
The walk stance, this time to the left he spurns
The direction of the receding sun
Where I will face when I die

I am the step
Yet know not the dancer from the dance
And Ewu township to me all seems
The poetical demon from Esan tribe
As the Odudu who opened the ritual
Begin the dance by walking forward
Head erect using toe to heel steps
Moving toward Oseremen Urdeeni
The right foot trailing in faint
Within the circle

and then
they fear me for being learned
and peopled my space casually like trees,
never weavering as they follow me
fearing my potential revelation is bad
yet...here i grows up
and the monastery a mile back
where i learned of a witch
called a computer
that i loved so much

then... like Nurudeen
the indigeneship has no clue
merged with those not born there,
and their fate, like trees, was seldom in their hands.
save when culture calls

so they fear me
for a poem that stole
songs lost but found
among an Elimi Dance

for these who never travelled
I envied them.
because to be local was to know
the beauty that is nature

The Ewe Trail
The experience I have growing up in my village was purely natural, it was the happiest compromise between the natural and the artificial, and it is a walking memory in my life that will end my journeying at old age.
My childhood was plain and simple, I and my folks were contented with the necessities of our life, we do not crave luxury, we prefer the plain type of food gotten mostly from our own sweat, and we discharge our societal duties in the simplest manner possible.
With my eyes closed I could name and list all the charming scenes of nature in this flat landscape that my little feet did trespass as a kid .
As a poet today i am planning to I recreate a map from my own footpaths, I think I can tell you about it all in a book titled “the Ewe trails”, I have long recorded some of the scenery of the changing seasons and the common contentment of daily living I experienced here in Eguare.

This year 2024 will be the year I want the book out... do get in touch so i add you to the whatsarp group chat 08052130879
