Journeying to Albania is an adventure in history and breathtaking landscapes. In this country, UNESCO sites are found at every turn.

Stopping first in picturesque Berat, known as the “city of a thousand windows” for its Ottoman-era hillside houses, Much of Albania’s Islamic architectural heritage was dismantled during the communist era, but Berat escaped this fate. The city's castle, perched atop a hill, houses a collection of Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques, weaving an architectural tapestry emblematic of Albania's diverse heritage.

Essentialist editor Elise Morton also recommends Butrint, Albania’s most extensive archaeological site, with the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans all leaving their mark. Once you’ve explored the ancient amphitheater and agora, lie back on the nearby pure white sands of the Ksamil Islands: Albania’s answer to the Maldives, surrounded by inviting, crystal-clear waters.

The Essential Guide to Mumbai, India

The city of seven islands and a sprawling megalopolis twice the size of New York, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is a powerhouse of business, Bollywood, and fashion.

Built in 1903 at the edge of the Arabian Sea, Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai is a city landmark in and of itself, with its bulbous domes photographed almost as frequently as the Gateway of India monument just steps away. Stay in the recently refurbished old palace building, where each room's furnishings draw from Mughal, European, and Anglo-Indian styles.

Visit the newly opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, created to preserve and promote Indian arts. This multidisciplinary space spotlights the best of Indian arts and culture.

South Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda (Black Horse) district was named after a black stone statue of King Edward VII mounted on a horse that stands in the area. Stroll through this crescent-shaped neighborhood, which houses incredible niche art galleries, all within walking distance of each other. The area also hosts the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival annually in February.

Shop for gifts to take back home or, even better, indulge in the most luxurious Ayurvedic, organic, and all-natural products for yourself at Forest Essentials. You can find stores of this leading Indian brand across the city.

Chef Manish Mehrotra works his magic with seasonal ingredients and inventive Indian Cuisine combined in very creative ways at Indian Accent Mumbai. Eat your way through the Mumbai menu, where unique, mouthwatering combinations like 'gunpowder prawns, red rice, smoked chili & raw mango curry', and 'burrata chaat, lotus root papdi, mustard tomato jam' come together.

Boasting sweeping grandiose views of Mumbai city and the Arabian Sea, AER Mumbai is the perfect place for evening sundowners. With innovative cocktails, premier wine selections, champagne, cognac options, a popular happy hour, and a DJ, you might never want to leave this bar and lounge located on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai.

The tear-drop island country has a thriving coastline. If you’re looking to ditch the capital of Colombo and instead drive along the coast with pit stops along the way, Sri Lanka has much to offer.

Perched on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, at the edge of Yala National Park where the ocean meets the jungle, is an incredible collection of 28 ‘Cocoons’ as part of Wild Coast Lodge. If you are looking for an adventure, this property is the perfect blend of restorative luxury set against wild and wonderful surroundings.

Take a seat in the wood-covered courtyard of Citra Sri Lanka, housed in a 40-year-old colonial-style bungalow. Citra, which means art in Sinhala, offers a modern take on Sri Lankan cuisine mixed with Mediterranean influences. Essentialist editor Akanksha Kamath recommends ordering the Fish Tartar Bruschetta, where the bruschetta is swapped with a bed of crispy poppadom, and a spicy local Arrak cocktail.

With surfers dotting the beaches morning, afternoon and evening, shops that tell a local design story, and bars and restaurants that quench thirst and appetite, Sri Lanka is a warm, wonderful, and wild getaway.

Just a short distance from Athens by ferry, lies a hidden gem in the Saronic Gulf opposite the Peloponnese.

Hydra has a Presidential Decree stating no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island (with the exception of the fire and rescue truck and ambulance). There are no roads, meaning people get around by walking, water taxis, or using mules and donkeys.

You can spend the day swimming from the Spilia Bathing Platforms, next to Hydra Town, walk to popular pebble beach Kamini, or the more adventurous, hike to Agios Nikolaos on the west coast, set against a backdrop of low mountains with sunbeds and a snack bar.

The island is also a Preserved National Monument; any new buildings must conform to aesthetics from the 1800’s. The result – unique architecture and respect for the past in a quintessentially Greek setting.

Over the past decade or so, Georgia's capital has grown into a cultural powerhouse. Tbilisi has seen numerous invasions, cultural influences, and destructions (29, to be precise).
