Ms Driver said she found her daughter's v**es and eventually realised — despite the packaging suggesting otherwise — they were "absolutely loaded with high doses of ni****ne".

"It was bad enough that I felt she was inhaling all this sticky juice as it was, but I couldn't understand why she couldn't stop," Ms Driver said.

"Once I realised, and did my research — and realised the levels of ni****ne and how quickly kids are getting addicted to v**es — then I was able to actually be much more supportive and try and facilitate some form of ni****ne replacement therapy.

The Queensland Department of Health have identified fake xanax tablets that contain protonitazene - a potent opioid - along with bromazolam - a potent benzodiazepine.

These two drugs in combination is very high risk of overdose.
Look out for slow breathing, pin prick pupils, loss of consciousness, skin turning blue or grey.

The Addiction Continuum 28/02/2023

https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/widening-the-lens/202302/the-addiction-continuum

Although individuals (especially teenagers) choose to experiment with drugs such as to***co, co***ne, he**in, or alcohol, no one chooses to become addicted. This is because most users of these substances do not even realize they are addicted until after it has already happened!

Once addicted, denial is the psychological defense used to disconnect from the problems of addiction, particularly the pain of being out of control. Once addicted, however, there is also a great deal of variability in the level of addiction. People who are addicted are not all running the same race, and some have much higher hurdles than others, although this is seldom recognized by outside observers.

When alcohol or other drugs alter the brain, they exaggerate and distort a individual's basic personality.
Common effects of addiction on personality are self-centeredness, irresponsibility, and blaming people, places, and things for their suffering.
Family members and friends also commonly harden their hearts out of frustration with a loved one's self-destructive behavior.
Recovery reveals the degree to which addiction, or being in a close relationship with an addict, has altered someone's personality.https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/healing-from-addiction/202302/the-relationship-between-addiction-and-personality

What is hangxiety? - Alcohol and Drug Foundation 23/02/2023

Hangxiety is partly caused by the chemical changes that take place in our brains when we drink.

Alcohol works on the brain’s GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor – this is what makes you feel more relaxed when you start drinking.

As drinking continues, our brains also start to shut off glutamate (which makes you anxious), increasing feelings of calm and being uninhibited.2

But as alcohol starts to wear off, our brain tries to restore the normal chemical balance.

It does this by both reducing the brain’s GABA (lessening calm feelings) and increasing glutamate (making us feel more anxious). Together this has the opposite effect compared to when you were drinking and increases anxiety.2

It’s important to remember many of the anxious thoughts or feelings you might experience after drinking could be caused by the chemical changes in your brain https://adf.org.au/insights/what-is-hangxiety/ .

What is hangxiety? - Alcohol and Drug Foundation After a night out drinking you might wake up feeling anxious or worried about what happened the night before. This could include feeling on-edge or irritable and being unable to sleep or relax.

Things to Consider when Providing Mental Health First Aid to Others - MHFA Community 19/02/2023

With a significant number of people experiencing anxiety, affective mood and/or substance disorders, creating a supportive environment to have a mental health first aid conversation is more important than ever.

When the opportunity to help someone arises, it can be tempting to jump straight into a conversation. The desire to alleviate a person’s stress can make it feel as though time is of the essence. However, taking time to prepare your approach to the person and the mental health conversation is time well spent.

This drug can save the lives of people who have overdosed on opioids, but it's not just aimed at illicit users 16/02/2023

authorities are concerned there is a misconception that only illicit drug users need Naloxone when the highest rate of opioid overdose occurs from prescription opioids.

For three Australians daily, having Naloxone on hand is the difference between life and death.

Naloxone is a life-saving drug that reverses opioid overdoses, allowing the patient to start breathing within two to five minutes of its use.

This drug can save the lives of people who have overdosed on opioids, but it's not just aimed at illicit users Almost 17,000 Australians have used a life-saving drug that works to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, but experts say more awareness is needed that the drug is safe, free and does not require a prescription.

Mr Chapman went on to say to not treat va**ng with the same level of risk as cigarette smoking would be to not learn from past lessons.

“When smoking first began, when ci******es first became available at the beginning of last century, we had no knowledge about lung cancer at all,” he said.

“In fact, lung cancer was a very rare disease. And it wasn’t until 1962 when medical authorities published the first report saying hey, listen like smoking causes lung cancer.

How va**ng threatens to undo Australia's successful war on smoking 31/01/2023

A recent study on e-cigarette use by 14-17 year-olds in NSW illustrated how freely available v**es are.

It estimated more than 30 per cent of young people in the age group had tried va**ng.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby Ellis told the study she had v**ed for three years but had been trying to quit for nine months.

'I knew that it was addictive when I first started va**ng, but you don't really think about it too much,' Ruby said.

'You don't fully realise what addicted means or how addictive it is until you become hooked'.

How va**ng threatens to undo Australia's successful war on smoking The gains made over decades in getting Australians to quit smoking could be almost wiped entirely by the rampant rise of va**ng amongst the young.

Australia produces over 76 million tonnes of waste each year, but only 60% is recycled.

Council is partnering with The Urunga Pharmacy and the Bellingen Compounding Pharmacy in a trial of recycling blister packs to help reduce our Shire’s waste to landfill.

The Dorrigo Plateau Pharmacy has already been recycling the packs over the past year and they’ve been overwhelmed by our community’s great response.

To get started on recycling your packs, take them to your nearest pharmacy. Talk to your local pharmacist about the program and how you can be involved.
