At RenewBee, we're aware that despite solar energy being one of the most cost-effective power sources, it's still underutilized. In Europe, a mere 6% of buildings, spanning residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, harness the power of rooftop solar. The situation is even less promising in the US, where only about 4% of buildings are equipped with rooftop solar systems.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: the world's rooftops cover an area of 0.2 million square kilometres, nearly equivalent to the size of the UK. Imagine if we could install solar photovoltaic panels on all these surfaces. The potential is staggering — we could generate up to 27 petawatt hours of electricity annually. That's more than the total global electricity consumption recorded in 2022. The future of energy is here, and it's shining brightly with solar power.

Let's embrace it together with RenewBee.

Did you know?

Last year, 56 GW of solar PV were installed in the EU, two thirds of it on rooftops, empowering consumers and protecting them from high electricity prices.

Achieving the 2030 EU target of at least 42.5% renewable energy by 2030, with an ambition to reach 45%, will require further acceleration in the deployment of renewable energy, including solar energy.

16/05/2024

The European Solar PV Industry Alliance (ESIA) set itself the target of 30 GW of production capacity along the value chain, an objective considered achievable by 2030.

In 2023, Germany achieved a milestone by deploying an unprecedented 14GW of solar energy capacity, with over a million new installations, predominantly in the residential rooftop category. This marked an impressive 85% increase from the previous year, as reported by the German Solar Association (BSW).

The surge in Germany's solar capacity was primarily fueled by the residential sector's enthusiasm for rooftop solar installations. The first quarter of 2023 saw the activation of 159,000 photovoltaic (PV) systems, more than doubling the figure from the first quarter of 2022, as highlighted by the BSW.

This expansion of the rooftop solar industry has been supported by the German government's economic policies. According to Solar Power Europe's latest analysis, the German solar market is largely driven by rooftop systems, benefiting from a dependable feed-in premium scheme and consistent auctions for installations exceeding 750kW—a limit that was raised to 1MW starting January 2023.

Additionally, a legislative package enacted in August aims to bolster this growth by simplifying the approval processes and easing regulations for retailers wishing to set up solar panels on their rooftops. This move aims to "clear hurdles and cut through red tape," in the words of Robert Habeck, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

The European Union's rooftop solar sector experienced a robust 54% annual growth, notably within the commercial and industrial segments. Conversely, the utility-scale solar market saw a 6% reduction in its share in 2023 due to various factors.

Challenges such as postponed auctions, escalated grid charges, an inflationary climate, as well as hurdles in permitting and grid connections, continue to pose significant obstacles for solar project developers across many areas, despite overarching EU legislation. Consequently, the introduction of new utility-scale solar projects in Europe amounted to 19 GW in 2023, up from 16 GW in 2022. In stark contrast, rooftop solar installations surged from 24 GW in 2022 to an impressive 37 GW in 2023.

Spain's rooftop solar sector is witnessing remarkable growth, driven by substantial government support and the strategic scrapping of the 'sun tax'. As we transition to cleaner fuels, the commercial and industrial segments are poised for significant expansion. This progress underscores Spain's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.

RenewBee GmbH plans to launch commercial rooftop solar projects in Spain this year.

Great news! 🌟 In 2023, the installation of rooftop solar panels in the UK hit a 12-year high, with almost 190,000 units added. 🏠☀️

Despite the vast surface area of our city roofs, only a small fraction is utilized for solar panels or green roofs. 🌿⚡ It's time to rethink how we utilize these spaces, considering the substantial benefits they offer.
While roofs are designed primarily for shelter, many can be adapted for greener purposes. There are thousands of hectares of suitable roofs ideal for solar panels, and the cost-effective nature of solar electricity adds to the appeal.

Take the example of King’s College, Cambridge, where the ancient chapel's roof was transformed into a solar electricity generator due to its perfect east-west alignment.

Moreover, flatter roofs on factories, warehouses, schools, and other buildings can also contribute to greener energy production. 🏭🔋 Let's continue to harness the power of rooftops for a more sustainable future! 💚

Exciting news from Solar Energy UK! 🌞 We're thrilled to stand behind the government's latest move to expand permitted development rights for rooftop solar panels. 🏡⚡

Currently, most solar panel installations enjoy exemption from planning permission requirements, but exceptions create hurdles for homes with flat roofs and installations exceeding one megawatt capacity, commonly seen in large commercial structures. 🏢💡

The good news? Proposed legislation aims to eliminate these exceptions, making rooftop solar installations smoother and more efficient by cutting down on unnecessary costs and delays. 🌐 Let's power up a greener future together! 💚

Solar Energy UK Chief Executive Chris Hewett said: “The potential of installing solar power on large commercial rooftops is vast, its prospective capacity having been estimated at 15GW across the country.

“So eliminating one of the stumbling blocks on the way to fulfilling that opportunity is extremely welcome, helping to make British businesses more competitive by slashing energy bills, bolstering the economy and pushing us further towards net zero.”
