‼️LAKE LEVEL CHANGE‼️
Sundt has completed the concrete work requiring the protection provided by the Bay 1 sheet pile cofferdam. They are ready to begin mobilizing to the next bay.
The first step is to cut down the Bay 1 sheet piling. As a result, the water level just upstream of the dam will likely lower about another two (2) feet from its current level, due to the modified shape of the Bay 1 spillway.
Sundt is expecting to begin cutting the sheet pile down tomorrow, October 23, 2024.
Well hot dam! 😜😉
Substantial completion date is on track for late September 2025. We love to see it! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

We received the coolest message through the FOLM website this week. It’s so special to remember how our Lake McQueeney has been serving up great memories for decades now.
“I used to live at Lake McQueeney and I came across this photo of the riverboat that was built on the lake by Pete Bagley in '73. The boat was docked at Lee Stange's Holiday Resort Marina until '79 when it was sold and moved to Town Lake in Austin. I shot this photo on July 4, 1975 when Captain Pete, as we called him, took the boat as far upriver as possible and beached it for 3 days of fireworks and beer. We ran for supplies in my jon boat, parked in front of the riverboat. On the front of the boat are Bruce Dodson and Judy Stange, and in the water is Donald Stange. I know this is ancient history, but maybe will bring back a happy memory to someone.”

FOLM wishes you and very happy 4th of July! Today is a great day for remembering our lake is special not just because of the water (though we are so excited and ready to have it back in all its glory!) but also because of the way we celebrate together! ❤️🤍💙
Some quick reminders to make sure celebrations stay fun and safe:
🎆🎇Practice fireworks safety! Don’t try to relight “duds,” properly extinguish lit fireworks once they’re done, only light one firework at a time, wear protective eyewear, and always make sure an adult is present.
🐶🐱Make sure your pets are secure inside. July 5th consistently results in more lost pets ending up in shelters because they were scared and accidentally ran far away from home during the fireworks.
🚮🌎 Clean up after your celebrations! We are working hard to remove debris from our lake and extended lake beds, so do your part to ensure new trash doesn’t end up in our water or littering our lake! Cleaning up old trash and stumps you find in the water along the way is extra credit!

If you’re like us, I’m sure you’re keeping an extra close eye on your cypress trees and wondering how they’re holding up during the double dose of heat and lake being lowered. We’ve got some encouraging news for you if that’s the case: “During drought, or times with no water, the trees go into a semi-dormant state and appear as if they are dying, with leaves browning and falling. However, the trees hold on to water internally. When rains or water returns many seemingly dead trees come out of dormancy and begin to leaf out again. The resiliency of baldcypress trees led foresters to wonder how many trees died during this window with low river levels. Of the 1,195 trees found in the stretch of the river from the IH-35N access bridge to the Lake Dunlap Dam, 88.3% were alive and 11.7% were determined to be dead.” Check out the study below.
Keep watering your trees and showing them love, but PLEASE do not cut them down or assume they’re dying without speaking to an arborist first. 💚
Giving some extra TLC to your cypress trees is a good idea while the lake is down. One easy way to do this is to wrap a hose near the base and turn it on low for a few hours a few times a week in order to ensure they’re getting enough water. If you have other tips and tricks for keeping our trees and wildlife happy and cared for during this time, drop them in the comments so we can share!
